Henry Golb again, for my\u00a0third and final\u00a0blog post of the summer. As a\u00a0brief\u00a0refresher,\u202fI\u2019m\u00a0Christy Tanner\u2019s intern working with\u00a0the\u202fsouth Willamette Valley\u202ffield\u202fcrops.\u00a0I am based\u202fout of\u202fLinn County, and my job is to assist\u00a0Christy\u00a0in\u202fboth\u202fthe field and the office.\u202f\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">It\u2019s hard to believe that my time with\u202fLinn County Extension\u00a0is coming to an end. It\u2019s been\u00a0a remarkable experience and I\u2019m very thankful I was able to work with this amazing group of people.\u00a0I just want to thank the faculty and staff of\u00a0Linn County Extension\u00a0for all their support this summer.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_552\" class=\"wp-caption thumbnail alignleft\" style=\"width: 245px;\">\n    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-552\" src=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3908\/files\/2021\/08\/Golb-mint-in-Jefferson-1024x766.jpeg\" alt=\"Blooming mint in Jefferson, Oregon. Photo by Henry Golb.<\/figcaption>\n    <\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Over the course of my 10 weeks at\u00a0the OSU Extension office in\u00a0Linn County I\u2019ve been\u00a0doing\u00a0ground sampling and drone flights in grass seed fields looking at vole damage,\u00a0collected the data for the Willamette Valley Mint Pest Alert newsletter,\u00a0and\u00a0I was in charge of compiling and editing the Willamette Valley, Central, and Eastern Mint Pest Alert newsletters each week.\u00a0I got to be\u00a0a part\u00a0of hop nutrient field research\u00a0study\u00a0with Christy\u2019s\u00a0north\u00a0valley counterpart,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Betsy Verhoeven, and so much more. A big highlight of my summer was having the opportunity to be given the tour of\u00a0Reerslev Farms\u2019 mint distillery just outside of Junction City. Seeing (and tasting) the final product of fields I worked in was pretty special. Riding around with John\u00a0Reerslev\u00a0and touring some his mint fields was the icing on the cake.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">All these experiences gave me a real-world taste of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Willamette Valley\u00a0agriculture and opened my eyes up to a world I\u2019d only experienced through classrooms and textbooks.\u00a0This internship taught me and showed me\u00a0practical\u00a0skills that can only be learned in the field.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">I walked into this internship not knowing much about\u00a0Extension.\u00a0I came in with the notion that\u00a0Extension\u00a0only\u00a0worked with and helped farmers.\u00a0While a sizeable portion of the\u00a0Extension\u00a0Service is focused on agriculture,\u00a0I could not have been farther from the truth. I learned about and saw programs from 4-H all the way to food preservation classes. I\u2019m walking out knowing that\u00a0Extension works with and improves the quality of life for all Oregonians.\u00a0I hope that more Oregonians see OSU Extension as a resource for them in their daily lives. Extension is here to serve and help the people.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">This internship could not be what it\u2019s been without the people I\u2019ve worked with. I want to take this opportunity to thank\u202fChristy, Betsy, and\u202fMichele Webster, who manages the\u202fLinn County\u202foffice, for believing in me and guiding me along the way.
