Spring 2016 &#8211; Shannon Davis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/erlenmeyer\/files\/2016\/11\/Shannon-Davis.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3941 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/erlenmeyer\/files\/2016\/11\/Shannon-Davis-216x300.jpg\" alt=\"shannon-davis\" width=\"216\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1046\/files\/2016\/11\/Shannon-Davis-216x300.jpg 216w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1046\/files\/2016\/11\/Shannon-Davis-768x1069.jpg 768w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1046\/files\/2016\/11\/Shannon-Davis-736x1024.jpg 736w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1046\/files\/2016\/11\/Shannon-Davis-400x557.jpg 400w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/1046\/files\/2016\/11\/Shannon-Davis.jpg 2046w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Shannon Davis has been named one of the Spring 2016 Undergraduates of the Quarter and we could not be happier.\u00a0 Shannon grew up in a modest suburb of Seattle.\u00a0 She attended Lynnwood High School which she reported was incredibly ethnically diverse and described her experience there as awesome.\u00a0 She took AP Chemistry while there and remembers Chemistry being the only AP test she didn\u2019t pass.\u00a0 \u201cThat\u2019s why I chose Chemistry,\u201d she remembers.\u00a0 \u201cI wanted to prove to myself that I could do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She came to OSU because she wanted to attend a PAC-12 school and with her choices being OSU and UW, she wanted something a little smaller and a little farther from home, so OSU was the obvious choice.\u00a0 \u201cPlus,\u201d she said, \u201cmy dad went here.\u201d\u00a0 She originally matriculated into Chemistry with a chemical engineering option, but quickly discovered she liked the general chemistry sequence and switched to the advanced chemistry option.\u00a0 She remembers having Dr. Richard Nafshun for her general chemistry instructor and said it was an amazing experience.<\/p>\n<p>Shannon says her favorite class has been the Experimental Chemistry series with Dr. Christine Pastorek and Emile Firpo.\u00a0 She also stated that they quickly became her favorite instructors.<\/p>\n<p>Shannon has been doing Undergraduate Research for Dr. Jennifer Field since just after fall term of her junior year.\u00a0 She said she trained for a whole year before she was able to do actual research.\u00a0 Now, she\u2019s using liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry to close mass balance in soil extractions.\u00a0 She says it\u2019s been challenging and slower going than she thought originally.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about extra-curricular activities, Shannon indicated that what she really enjoyed were the Family Science and Engineering Nights and Discovery Days.\u00a0 The outreach and chemistry volunteer work were a lot of fun.<\/p>\n<p>Upon graduation, Shannon will be attending U Mass Boston to study marine science.\u00a0 She\u2019s currently unsure of what she wants to do post-PhD, but is leaning toward teaching.\u00a0 She does know, she\u2019s excited about moving cross-country.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations, Shannon!\u00a0 It is talented students like you that make OSU Chemistry such as special place.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Shannon Davis has been named one of the Spring 2016 Undergraduates of the Quarter and we could not be happier.\u00a0 Shannon grew up in a modest suburb of Seattle.\u00a0 She attended Lynnwood High School which she reported was incredibly ethnically diverse and described her experience there as awesome.\u00a0 She took AP Chemistry while there&hellip;
