{"id":1363,"date":"2013-09-27T08:18:49","date_gmt":"2013-09-27T16:18:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/erlenmeyer\/?p=1363"},"modified":"2013-09-27T08:31:02","modified_gmt":"2013-09-27T16:31:02","slug":"huffington-post-breaking-bad-science-consultant-dishes-on-chemistry-behind-hit-tv-series","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/erlenmeyer\/2013\/09\/27\/huffington-post-breaking-bad-science-consultant-dishes-on-chemistry-behind-hit-tv-series\/","title":{"rendered":"Huffington Post &#8211; Breaking Bad Science Consultant Dishes on Chemistry Behind Hit TV Series (VIDEO)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>In addition to being showered with accolades from Hollywood insiders, this year&#8217;s<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amctv.com\/shows\/breaking-bad\" target=\"_hplink\">Emmy Award-winner for best television drama, &#8220;Breaking Bad,&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0has been also<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/talking-back\/2013\/08\/21\/the-straight-dope-a-qa-with-the-prof-behind-the-good-science-in-breaking-bad\/\" target=\"_hplink\">praised by members of the scientific community<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To us who are educated in science, whenever we see science presented inaccurately, it&#8217;s like fingernails on the blackboard,&#8221; the AMC show&#8217;s science advisor\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/faculty-staff.ou.edu\/N\/Donna.J.Nelson-1\/\" target=\"_hplink\">Dr. Donna Nelson<\/a>, a professor of organic chemistry at the University of Oklahoma, tells\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/BytesizeScience\/about\" target=\"_hplink\">the American Chemical Society&#8217;s Bytesize Science series<\/a>\u00a0in the video above. &#8220;It just drives us crazy, and we can&#8217;t stay immersed in the show.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately for Nelson and like-minded scientists, &#8220;Breaking Bad&#8221; gets the science mostly right in its tale of chemistry-teacher-turned-meth-overlord Walter White.<\/p>\n<p>Nelson actually works with\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amctv.com\/shows\/breaking-bad\/crew\/vince-gilligan\" target=\"_hplink\">the show&#8217;s creator, Vince Gilligan<\/a>, to fact-check scripts. She even suggests chemical structures for Walter to draw on his blackboard.<\/p>\n<p>But Nelson did identify one glaring inaccuracy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The powder blue meth that you see is really sort of like Walter&#8217;s trademark,&#8221; Nelson explains in the video. &#8220;In real life, meth would not be powder blue like that.
