The results of my IPIP test indicate that in the dimensions of Extraversion and Openness to Experience my relative ranking is average. In the dimensions of Agreeableness and Conscientiousness my relative ranking is high. And on the dimension of Neuroticism my relative ranking is low. These results would indicate that I have the following tendencies- I am equally comfortable spending time with others and time alone; I enjoy working and collaborating with others; I see work and projects to their end; I remain calm in a wide range of situations and don’t get emotionally high or low based on the conditions around me; I am equally comfortable with both routine processes and things, as well as trying new and different things.
I believe employers across a wide variety of industries could value my traits of Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, and Neuroticism. The relative rankings I had in each of these dimensions would indicate that I work well in team environments. Much of the work done today in developed economies is knowledge-based (versus task-based) and accomplished by cross-functional teams. Teams compromising members of design, product management, marketing, sales, etc. work collaboratively to solve complex challenges and problems in service of the organization’s customers. Depending on the complexity of the challenges and/or problems the organization is delivering to its customers, an average relative ranking in the dimension of Openness to Experience could be viewed as a negative. If creativity were an important attribute for success in a job, an organization may look for candidates that rank high in the dimension of Openness to Experience.
An organization whose primary product is produced by employees performing individual based tasks and then passing off their completed piece of the work (i.e., assembly line work) would likely view several of my personality traits as neutral to negative for job performance. Specifically, the traits of Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Openness. In an environment where the priority is for individual employees to complete their assigned task in a highly consistent manner and requiring little to no variation in process, my relative ranking in the dimension of Conscientiousness might be valued. But my traits of working and collaborating with other employees could likely be viewed as a distraction to accomplishing my assigned task.
