Experiences With Discrimination

When I learn of a company’s involvement in discriminatory behavior I will pause my support of that company- i.e., no longer purchase from them- until they have updated their policy’s and/or practices.

I deliberately chose the word “pause” in recognition of the following.

First, I weigh the authenticity and accuracy of the article. The publication and evidence provided by the author(s) are examples of the type of content from the news article that I would consider.

Next, if I conclude the claims of discriminatory behavior are accurate my pause of supporting the company would continue. Through observing the actions of the company, I will decide if my support will be a pause or potentially permanent. I believe some organizations, like individuals, can learn from and correct errors made. If learning, growing, and actual behavioral change by the organization can be visibly observed, I’ll considered supporting the company again in the future. But it’s a case-by-case decision for me- I believe some organizations unfortunately do not learn and grow from these experiences. There are several well-known brands that I’ve not supported for 20+ years even though the lawsuits filed against them have long been concluded.

My attitude towards applying for a job with a company is similar. If I believe a company is currently engaged in discriminatory behavior, I will not apply to work for that company. If the company had reports of discriminatory behavior in the past, it would be a case-by-case decision for me. I would do the research and due diligence to determine the degree the company has changed their work environment by learning from and correcting discriminatory behaviors before applying for a job.

  1. Hey Eric

I enjoyed reading your blog because it gave me some insights that I did not consider when making my blog. You made a good point about first considering the accuracy and authenticity of the article that is making these claims. If the article ends up being correct it is then important to decide if it was the company as a whole that was involved in this discrimination, or just a individual within the company. This can make a large difference when it comes to whether or not this company should still be supported.
