Week 2

For this week’s blog post, we are talking about job descriptions. I think it is difficult to completely and accurately describe a job within a few paragraphs, but it is one of the most important things a company can do to attract new employees.

In my experience, a job description is the first thing that attracts me to apply for a job. It needs to be eye catching, and provide me with the right information about the job that I need to apply. Some of this information could be schedule requirements, needed experience, pay, and also what the company is like. While employers are looking for new employees who match the description they provide, those who are applying are also looking for a job that matches their values.

Developing a job description can be a hard task, considering that many jobs consist of much more than just a few simple paragraphs. One way to combat the problem of being too vague or oversharing in a job description would be to ask current employees how to describe the job. Since they are the ones in the position, they know exactly what it is like. This way, new applicants can understand what they are applying for.

Maintaining a job description can also be difficult, but is also very important. The first step in this is checking in on it every day or so. This way you are aware of all new applicants, and can also delete the job if you have already hired someone, so you do not have other applying when there is no spot to be filled. If you need to repost a job description, you can ask the employee who is leaving to give you a few hints on how to describe the job better. You could also ask them what parts of the job description related well to the work they were doing, and which parts didn’t. With jobs changing all the time, the most updated information will help attract new employees.

An accurate job description is the best way to attract applicants that are right for the job, ensure that new hires are aware of the tasks they are being asked of, and to also protect your company from any unwanted attention.
