The importance of job analysis and job descriptions.

Reflection

As I reflect on my personal experiences I remember the times I agreed to positions and then shorty later I was disappointed by how the job was far from what the description had claimed to be. Jobs are always changing and roles are always developing. That is why it is important to stay up to date with job descriptions. When I was hired at a my previous place of employment I was under the assumption my role included; greeting guest, seating them, and making sure the restaurant bathroom and lobby was in great condition. Nearly immediately after I started, my role turned into; bussing tables, delivering food, taking orders, etc. But I did not receive compensation for these new roles.

The Issue

I quickly realized once I started this job that I got tricked into accepting the position. The Job Design and Analysis was crafted to make me think I was doing different tasks than I was actually going to be asked to do. The job that I actually received had many disadvantages attached to it.

Moving Forward

I understand developing and maintaining job descriptions can be challenging but I think with the correct motivation and possible outcomes it is well worth it. When creating a Job Description it is important to include an efficient yet accurate description of the roles of the Job. Adding things like compensation, tasks, skills, and KSAO’s are all important to ensure that the applicant is not confused or mislead on what they are applying to. It may be challenging to create a strong job description and analysis but the employee retention that comes from it is outstanding. Also, it is important to make sure your job description and analysis are staying up to date. In my own experience because the job was nothing like what I thought it was going to be I quit within one month.
