EXPERIENCE
Interviewing can be somewhat of a terrifying experience. From past experience the interviews that cause me the most stress and hardship are the ones I do not do my most research on. Before entering an interview I find it useful to look on the website of the company I have applied to. I also do research about what exactly my position would entail. And finally, I come up with a few questions to ask relating to my how my passion intersects with the particular job. I find this last step very important. Mangers can tell when someone has looked up random questions that have no meaning to them. So coming up with questions that are unique to ones self is so important.
LESSON
In our readings and lectures we learn the importance of recruitment. Recruitment is finding peoples unique talents and strengths and deciding if they will support the company and co workers as a whole. We also learned the importance of finding people. When thinking about diversity and inclusion it is important to recognize how important recruiting affects this. Some companies are predominantly when race or gender and wonder why. My response is: where are you recruiting? If you want diversity sometimes you have to recruit demographics that have it (external recruiting). Selection is also very important. When thinking about diversity the question then arises- are you recruiting purely off of skill and experience or are you considering other things that will overall help your company. I think sometimes companies take the easy way out and hire people that look like them because it is the more comfortable thing to do. Hiring a diverse pool of people can boost team morale, improve output, and generate great discussion.
MOVING FORWARD
I think it is important as someone getting interviewed to come educated on the position and company you are applying to. Also, I think it is important to be your authentic self. Companies have a hard decision of people to select from and being yourself, asking authentic questions, and showing honest interest in the company can go a long ways. Additionally as a company looking to hire new talent it is important to consider changing the locations you recruit from. Recruiting to a more diverse location will create a more diverse staff offering a brand new perspective you may have never seen or heard before.
