2. Social Factors  March 7th, 2016

Due to the fact that IUD’s are inserted into the female uterus, it does make it a female product only. Even if men wanted to, they could not take any ownership over the intrauterine device. Once the IUD is placed in the uterus it is primarily used for the women. But, because the women can not get pregnant, the man is also getting some of the benefits.

Unfortunately for intrauterine devices, they got a bad reputation from the Dalkon Shield. Like said previously, during the 1970’s the Dalkon Shield went through a lot of nasty lawsuits. Due to this, they had to be taken off the market and a trust be opened for anyone who was a victim. Because the severity of the situation was so strong, the IUD was almost ruined forever. When speaking to my parents about this topic they had very mixed feelings with IUD’s. Both of them happened to tell me that they thought the IUD’s were too dangerous to be put into humans. They were pretty shocked my own doctor recommended it to me. The only thing they remembered was that people died from the drug, and women were getting their Dalkon Shield embedded into their uterus after a couple years. Luckily enough for female users, the Dalkon Shield was officially taken off the market, so problems like this could be avoided.

Even though some generations look at IUD’s as a thing of the past, and something that failed, newer generations are finding it one of the best forms of birth control. According to TIMES Magazine, IUD’s are being used around the globe as a means of birth control. For example the magazine stated, “Separate research has shown that 23% of French women using contraception use and IUD as well as 27% of Norwegian women and 41% of women in China”. With China having one of the largest populations on the planet, 41% really goes to show just how many women worldwide find these a great option to use.

From 2016 on, user growth will only sky rocket. In modern days, women’s lives are just as demanding as men’s. Because of that they can not afford to take time to consume a birth control pill, or put a patch on. For them it is much easier to get an IUD inserted into them and eventually lose their periods. Since women have better gender equality now, they don’t need their periods and contraceptive pills slowing them down.
