The sandbox sites and surveys for Canvas and Blackboard 14 are now available through the end of Spring term for you to log into and try out the features of each system. Your informed feedback will shape the best decision for OSU.
Excited to get started? Here is everything you need to know:
Guided lab sessions – There are many open lab sessions scheduled throughout Spring term where instructors and students can drop in, access the systems, and submit surveys. The advantage of the open labs is that we’ll have support staff on hand to help you log in to each site, find and use the features and tools, answer questions, and record your additional feedback. There will be light snacks offered at each lab session. See the schedule of lab sessions at the end of this page.
Explore on your own – whether or not you attend a lab session, all instructors and students are invited to access sample sites. The sample sites have commonly-used LMS features: learning content; assignments; quizzes, discussions, grade centers, etc.

Sandbox login details:
Canvas – [sandbox environment is no longer available]
Blackboard 14 – [sandbox environment is no longer available]
Using a generic login, you may create new documents, quizzes, assignments, add content, grade student work, etc. The sample sites will be overwritten periodically to “clean out” the results of your explorations. Generic usernames and passwords for students and instructors are the same for both Canvas and Bb 14 (no ONID login for these sandbox sites):
Username (10 instructor and 10 student usernames) | Password (one password for each username group) |
open_instructor1-10 (choose a number 1-10) | testing123 |
open_student1-10 (choose a number 1-10) | testingABC |
Please note – our technical support resources are very limited; OSU is not able to provide Help Desk support for the sandbox sites. We have some general information about Canvas on this blog. If you have additional questions about features or functionality, please refer to each vendor’s online resources:
Not sure what to do in the sites? See sample tasks for Instructors: LMS evaluation instructor tasks
This is all great, but I want my own Canvas site
Instructors who complete surveys may request a Canvas sandbox site for their own use (there’s a link in the survey). We will accommodate as many of these requests as the LMS technical team can manage. As with the sample sites, OSU is not able to provide Help Desk support for the sandbox sites. Please refer to each vendor’s online resources (links above).
Open Lab Sessions
An RSVP is requested, but not required. Please let Lynn Greenough know if you plan to attend a lab session (or if you have any questions, comments or suggestions): lynn.greenough@oregonstate.edu
