Our work will help open source software tools and\ntechnology support diverse cognitive styles that will help bring diversity in\nthought by enabling diversity in open source contributors.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u2013 Anita Sarma, associate professor of computer science in the College of Engineering at Oregon State. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Principal investigators:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Lead PI: Anita Sarma, associate professor of\ncomputer science, Oregon State University<\/li><li>Co-PI: Margaret Burnett, Distinguished Professor\nof computer science, Oregon State University<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In collaboration with: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>PI: Igor Steinmacher, assistant professor,\nNorthern Arizona University<\/li><li>Co-PI: Marco Gerosa, associate professor,\nNorthern Arizona University<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Agency:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>National Science Foundation<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Award amount:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>$1.4 million between the two universities,  $870,773 to Oregon State.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Research objectives:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This research will investigate whether and how open source\nsoftware tools and technologies have gender biases tied with diverse\nproblem-solving styles, and how to remove any such biases. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This work will harness foundational gender research to\nprovide theory-based yet practical solutions and redesigns of open source\nsoftware projects to address the underrepresentation of women. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The redesigns and the process of creating inclusive tools\nwill be empirically evaluated to create a compendium of &#8220;best\npractices&#8221; for fixing gender-bias bugs, in both products (what suitable\nfixes are to such bugs) and processes (how open source software teams can work\ntogether to fix gender-bias bugs). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Broader impacts:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Open source is having a significant impact on society, in\nthe products it produces and the career paths that it facilitates. However,\nwomen are vastly underrepresented among open source developers. This is a\nsignificant concern to these communities because it prevents them from\nreceiving the benefits of a larger talent pool and of team diversity. The\nproblem is perpetuated when women developers miss the learning and professional\ngrowth opportunities that open source software projects provide, and are\noverlooked when open source contributions are used to make hiring decisions.\nOur work will help break down these gender-bias barriers in tools and\ntechnology used in open source software.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=1901031&amp;HistoricalAwards=false\">More\ninformation is on the NSF website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cOpen source software is changing the technology and workforce landscape.
