IPIP Results

I took the full version IPIP-NEO Test, and the results were mixed. When it comes to Extroversion, I scored low, which is spot on. I am often called quiet and reserved by family and friends. Sometimes they think something is wrong. Almost all the time there is nothing wrong, I am just content. I do enjoy solitude and have very few friends, but we are very close and consider each other family. I have a high degree of Agreeableness, which I believe also to be true. I am not very sympathetic towards others unless I have a personal relationship with that person. I attempt to be pleasant and cooperative, which I believe to be mostly true during groupwork, which leads to the next personality domain. I scored high in Conscientiousness, which seems to be true based on reviews of me presented by family members, classmates, and colleagues. I try to pull my weight in every situation because being dependable is important to me. So is my work ethic. I want my daughter to learn that hard work gets you what you want, and nothing is handed to you, so earn it. My Neuroticism was rated as average. This was a little surprising considering my nickname is Iceman, known for being calm and rational in almost any situation. It might be because I internalize it, but being average is fine with me because no one knows me as someone who flies off the handle. The most surprising was Openness to Experience because I was rated low. While I like things to be orderly, I love to travel and experience new cultures and cuisines. I am conservative and practical, but I also have a sense of adventure when attempting to try new things.

A future employer would look at these results and see high scores for Agreeableness and Conscientiousness. I think they would like my Agreeableness and think of it as being a good team player and a pleasure to work with. With the collaboration levels of working environments continuing to increase, this could impress a potential employer I applied with. There is however a weakness in this score. As mentioned above, I am not sympathetic towards others unless I know them on a personal level. I come across as standoffish a lot of the time, even when the situation suggests I should be empathetic. I have always been this way and I don’t see it changing any time soon. Scoring high in Conscientious makes sense. I pride myself in being reliable and hard-working. I believe many employers would be attracted to this quality because they would understand they have an applicant who is willing to devote a good portion of themselves to their job. A probable employer may also be happy with someone who is average when it comes to Neuroticism. Having an even keel is a benefit in the office because overreactions to situations can cause problems with colleagues, something I try to avoid. A definite weakness would be the low score to Openness to Experience. As previously stated, this was a bit surprising, but for an office setting, it is true. Thinking about how I am in my working environment, I am not the biggest fan of change. I don’t see this quality changing, but I may not have a choice given we have a new manager in my department and a new CEO starting in June. It will be a good test for me as it will challenge me to venture out of my comfort zone.

    Hi John,
We’re glad you took the IPIP-NEO test and gained insight into your personality profile. Let’s break down your results and how they are perceived by potential employers. Starting with extroversion, you mentioned scoring low, which is consistent with your self-perception as a quiet introvert. While some people may view your introverted personality as problematic, you clarify that you are content and enjoy being alone. It is important to recognize that introversion has its advantages, such as the ability to focus and reflect deeply. Some employers value employees who are self-driven and can work independently, so your low extroversion score will not necessarily be viewed negatively. Next is agreeableness, where you score high. This shows that you make an effort to be pleasant and cooperative, especially in a group setting. Employers often appreciate individuals who can work well with others, as collaboration and teamwork are critical in many work environments. However, you mentioned the limitations of showing empathy for others unless you have a personal relationship with them. While it is important to set boundaries, it may be helpful to find a balance between maintaining personal space and showing empathy or support when necessary, especially in a professional setting. Your high score for due diligence reflects your strong work ethic, reliability, and desire to be dependable. These qualities are highly valued by employers because they demonstrate a strong commitment to performing your duties and completing tasks on time. Your dedication and responsibility can be seen as strengths and contribute positively to your professional reputation. When considering how your results may be perceived by employers, your high scores for agreeableness and due diligence may be viewed positively. These traits indicate that you are a team player, reliable and committed to your work. Your average neuroticism score can be considered an asset because it indicates emotional stability and the ability to respond effectively to workplace challenges. However, your low Openness to Experience score may be seen as a potential weakness, especially if the role or organization requires adaptability and openness to change. It’s worth remembering that adaptability is a valuable skill in today’s rapidly changing work environment. Being receptive to new perspectives and open to different approaches can contribute to personal and professional development.
Overall, it is important to acknowledge your strengths and areas of development. Recognizing your tendencies and being aware of potential limitations can help you respond effectively to different work situations. In addition, as you mentioned in your incoming new manager and CEO, being open to stepping out of your comfort zone can provide you with opportunities to grow and broaden your horizons.

    Hi John,
It is good post. Your analysis of score and relating them in perspective of potential employer is good. Your scoring high in Conscientious being reliable and hard-working is a great asset to any employer and team.
I believe low scores on Openness to Experience being not a biggest fan of change is common across many employees. I agree that me too not a big fan of the change, but within last quarter I was moved under four different directors in my company. It is an organizational restructuring and voluntary retiring opportunities that made me move so many times with my direct reports. We can not control the change, but it is your readiness to get adjusted positively to the change is more important. Your being reliable and hard working score is great asset you use to shine during these changes. Good post and analysis.
    Thank you
