I come from an old school way of thought, and it has taken time to adjust my method of thinking when it comes to understanding myself as a brand. When I currently think of myself in the way of a brand, I think of intangible things that cannot be seen. I think of integrity, honesty, and diligence which all play into hard work and accomplishing goals and tasks set forth by my company. In my current position, measurables in way of my duties and responsibilities are few and far between, meaning that I am not able to make them a part of my brand. As I move forward in my career and can make impactful and measurable goal achievements, that will significantly change how I build my brand. The qualities I mentioned above as my brand go together with why I wanted to become a professional baseball umpire. Whether we, as fans, agree with the calls they make on the field or not, they are there to uphold the integrity of baseball and are the last line of defense to achieve that part of the game. As such, my brand advertisement would be myself dressed in a business suit, calling pitches balls or strikes behind the plate with a protective mask on among a catcher and a batter. I would create a list of these characteristics to go in the background and check them off as if they were on a checklist. I selected the qualities for a specific reason. Integrity comes from calling the game in a fair and unbiased way. Honesty means always being truthful in your ruling on the field and telling players why you made the decision you made in a genuine way. Diligence stems from always working hard to get into position to make the right decision, even if it means having to admit you were wrong based on further evidence, something video replay has allowed professional baseball to accomplish. Crossing the suit over into the mix signifies a transition of these qualities, my brand, from the field to the office. Whether on the field or in the office, I am ready to go!

Hi John,
I can definitely relate to having a position without any meaningful measurables. That’s how I felt in my last position so when I was looking for my next job I really had to express my capabilities through experiences rather than statistics. That can be challenging but I think you have the right idea using your traits. The concept for your ad is really good as well. I was able to picture it while I was reading and I think it would cover all the requirements for an effective ad. I can see it being visually appealing with an image of you in the suit and the text would be simple yet effective for the readers. The way you direct each trait to an aspect of the game tells the potential employers you understand and appreciate the game.
