{"id":7455,"date":"2015-01-20T17:46:27","date_gmt":"2015-01-21T00:46:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/sustainability\/blog\/?p=7455"},"modified":"2015-01-20T17:46:27","modified_gmt":"2015-01-21T00:46:27","slug":"7455","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/ecologue\/2015\/01\/20\/7455\/","title":{"rendered":"Corvallis makes Georgetown University Energy Prize Quarterfinals!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6611\" title=\"Georgetown\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/ecologue\/files\/2014\/10\/Georgetown.jpg\" alt=\"Georgetown\" width=\"408\" height=\"181\" \/>Corvallis has made it to the quarterfinals for the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/guep.org\/\">Georgetown University Energy Prize<\/a>, a $5 million incentive to reduce energy consumption. Now that we&#8217;ve made it this far, we need everyone&#8217;s help to save more energy than the 49 other American cities in the competition.<\/div>\n<div>The winning city will be judged based on reductions in energy use, innovation of approach, quality of community outreach, sustainability, and replicability.<\/div>\n<div>The Corvallis application was submitted \u00a0in June, including letters of support from numerous local businesses and non-profits, Mayor Julie Manning, the Corvallis City Council, and all three utilities: Pacific Power, Consumers Power and Northwest Natural.<\/div>\n<div>Members of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sustainablecorvallis.org\/\">Corvallis Sustainability Coalition<\/a>\u2019s Energy Action Team (EAT) and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/energizecorvallis.org\/\">Energize Corvallis<\/a> \u2013 a project of the Corvallis Environmental Center \u2013 spent months assembling the town\u2019s application. The $5 million GUEP prize will be awarded to the community that reduces its residential and municipal use of metered electricity and natural gas more than any other contest entrant.<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1441\" title=\"CFL\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/ecologue\/files\/2011\/11\/CFL-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"CFL\" width=\"151\" height=\"114\" \/><\/p>\n<div>The goals of the GUEP are to foster innovative approaches to energy efficiency, educate the public and engage students in energy issues, and to grow markets for products &amp; services that facilitate energy efficiency.<\/div>\n<div>The final stage of the two-year competition began on January 1st, and now it&#8217;s time for us to put our best foot forward to help make Corvallis a national leader in sustainability!
