Click to view larger.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>San Francisco is known for its spectacles, but on March 20, 2010, the city was host to one that turned most gazes: a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plastiki\">ship made entirely from recycled plastic<\/a>. Named the <em>Plastiki, <\/em>the catamaran was to cross the Pacific Ocean to Sydney, Australia, in order to raise awareness about the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Great_Pacific_Garbage_Patch\">massive amounts of plastic pollution<\/a> in the world\u2019s oceans. The entire voyage covered 8,000 nautical miles.<\/p>\n<p>The vessel was created using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zN4zvl5Kr0k\">12,500 recovered water bottles<\/a>, as well as other PET plastic waste, and came equip with solar panels, wind turbines, bicycle generators, and a small garden.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>From bottles to bridges: world\u2019s largest bottle structure <\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6664\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6664\" style=\"width: 122px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/ecologue\/files\/2014\/10\/390px-Plastic_bottle_at_14000_feet_sealed_at_14000_feet.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6664      \" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/ecologue\/files\/2014\/10\/390px-Plastic_bottle_at_14000_feet_sealed_at_14000_feet-195x300.png\" alt=\"390px-Plastic_bottle_at_14000_feet,_sealed_at_14000_feet\" width=\"122\" height=\"191\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6664\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">What would you turn me into?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Water bottles are a fairly resilient material, and have been used to create a variety of objects, as showcased above. But would you want to walk on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/cosmin-gheorghe\/a-different-use-of-pets-r_b_5624264.html\">bridge made from plastic bottles<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s what the team of volunteers at <a href=\"http:\/\/ecostuff.ro\/\">Ecostuff <\/a>did, creating what may be the world\u2019s largest plastic bottle structure in Timsoara, Romania. By tying together plastic plastic bottles with polypropylene rope, and securing the bottles in welded cages made of nets, the crew created 76 brick-like modules, which were attached together to form the bridge.<\/p>\n<p><em>This post is part of the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/sustainability\/blog\/tag\/reedcyclers-believe-it-or-not\/\">Reedcycler&#8217;s Believe it or Not<\/a>&#8221; blog series, which showcases weird waste-related stories.
