{"id":4380,"date":"2014-01-16T12:21:21","date_gmt":"2014-01-16T19:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/sustainability\/blog\/?p=4380"},"modified":"2014-01-16T12:21:21","modified_gmt":"2014-01-16T19:21:21","slug":"osu-student-study-sustainable-business-practices-in-corvallis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/ecologue\/2014\/01\/16\/osu-student-study-sustainable-business-practices-in-corvallis\/","title":{"rendered":"OSU student study sustainable business practices in Corvallis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In spring 2013, Dr. Hilary Boudet&#8217;s class of public policy graduate students embarked on a partnership with the <a href=\"http:\/\/sustainablecorvallis.org\/\">Corvallis Sustainability Coalition<\/a> to help answer the following question: <strong><span style=\"color: #008000\"><em>How can the Coalition encourage local businesses to implement more sustainable practices?<\/em><\/span><\/strong> The class also addressed questions of defining what a sustainable business practice looked like.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4387 alignnone\" title=\"Saving-Green_PowerPoint_Presentation\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/ecologue\/files\/2014\/01\/Saving-Green_PowerPoint_Presentation.jpg\" alt=\"Saving-Green_PowerPoint_Presentation\" width=\"395\" height=\"274\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A primary purpose of the study was to identify the incentives and criteria that will support the Coalition&#8217;s goal of fostering sustainable practices in the local business community.\u00a0 It also examined barriers to implementation and the sustainable practices currently employed by Corvallis businesses.\u00a0 To accomplish these goals, the class conducted case studies of sustainable business programs in similar communities and completed surveys and interviews with local Corvallis businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Key findings indicated that <strong>recycling, community involvement, reduced resource and product consumption and local product sourcing were implemented<\/strong> in Corvallis businesses.\u00a0 Challenges included <strong>lack of materials availability, difficulty with product sourcing, cost limited control over leased &#8211; rather than owned &#8211; building space<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Check out the in depth report and PowerPoint presentation on the <a href=\"http:\/\/sustainablecorvallis.org\/2013\/05\/saving-green-presentation-by-osu-grad-students\/\">Corvallis Sustainability Coalition&#8217;s website<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In spring 2013, Dr. Hilary Boudet&#8217;s class of public policy graduate students embarked on a partnership with the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition to help answer the following question: How can the Coalition encourage local businesses to implement more sustainable practices?
