{"id":375,"date":"2010-11-15T16:50:34","date_gmt":"2010-11-15T23:50:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/sustainability\/blog\/?p=375"},"modified":"2010-11-15T16:50:34","modified_gmt":"2010-11-15T23:50:34","slug":"jefferson-street-stormwater-project-the-process-begins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/ecologue\/2010\/11\/15\/jefferson-street-stormwater-project-the-process-begins\/","title":{"rendered":"Jefferson Street Stormwater Project: The Process Begins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/water.oregonstate.edu\/oakcreek\/index.htm\">Oak Creek<\/a> is OSU\u2019s main waterway; it is the only stream, creek or river to pass through the Corvallis campus and 40% of its watershed lies on land managed by OSU.\u00a0 Numerous classes, undergrads, grad students and professors have used Oak Creek for research and experiential learning.\u00a0 It drains portions of the OSU McDonald-Dunn Research Forest and supplies irrigation water to OSU agricultural areas before emptying into the Mary\u2019s River, which eventually feeds into the Willamette.<\/p>\n<p>Due to the close connection of Oak Creek &amp; OSU, it was welcome news when the City of Corvallis \u00a0decided to include a stormwater improvement project near the Hindsale Wave Research Lab (past 35<sup>th<\/sup> Street on Jefferson) on Oak Creek as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ci.corvallis.or.us\/index.php?option=content&amp;task=view&amp;id=524&amp;Itemid=462\">2011 Capital Improvement Program (CIP)<\/a>.\u00a0 Originally proposed by the Water Action Team of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sustainablecorvallis.org\/\">Corvallis Sustainability Coalition<\/a>, this project hopes to improve the water quality of Oak Creek, create welcoming habitat for wildlife, engage students and community members, all while providing educational and research opportunities to students of all ages.\u00a0 Preliminary designs include bioswales, native plants, and artificial wetlands, with alterations to the site to provide public access.\u00a0 Signage, field trips and ongoing experiments would raise awareness and augment standard stormwater education.<\/p>\n<p>Design work is slated to be complete by July 2011, while the project should be completed by July 2012.\u00a0 A total award of $200,000 will help fund this project and another stormwater improvement project.
