{"id":339,"date":"2010-11-09T14:52:50","date_gmt":"2010-11-09T21:52:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/sustainability\/blog\/?p=339"},"modified":"2010-11-09T14:52:50","modified_gmt":"2010-11-09T21:52:50","slug":"epa-recycling-challenge-fundraises-for-local-food-share","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/ecologue\/2010\/11\/09\/epa-recycling-challenge-fundraises-for-local-food-share\/","title":{"rendered":"EPA recycling challenge fundraises for local food share"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As mentioned previously on this blog, OSU is competing for the first time in the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/epawaste\/partnerships\/wastewise\/challenge\/gameday\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">EPA Game Day Challenge<\/a><\/strong>, a nationwide competition between universities to reduce waste at  football games.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/recycle.oregonstate.edu\" target=\"_blank\">Campus Recycling<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/oregonstate.edu\/groups\/sife\/\" target=\"_blank\">OSU Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE)<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.csc.gen.or.us\/foodshare.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Linn Benton Food Share<\/a>, and a group of dedicated volunteers came together at the October 30th OSU football game to recycle for the greater good. We collected and sorted recyclables from the tailgating areas, stadium gates, and stadium stands and redeemed deposits to contribute to the Linn Benton Food Share.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_340\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-340\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-340\" title=\"EPAChallengeContainers\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/ecologue\/files\/2010\/11\/EPAChallengeContainers.jpg\" alt=\"Deposit containers collected, sorted &amp; redeemed for the food share\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-340\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Deposit containers collected, sorted &amp; redeemed for the food share<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong> The Results:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-343\" title=\"2010EPAChallengeAccomplishments\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/ecologue\/files\/2010\/11\/2010EPAChallengeAccomplishments.png\" alt=\"2010EPAChallengeAccomplishments\" width=\"420\" height=\"291\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We recycled approximately <strong>6,456  lbs \u2013 over 3 tons<\/strong>!<\/li>\n<li>We collected and sorted approximately <strong>6,620<\/strong> deposit containers (glass, metal, and plastic)!<\/li>\n<li>We raised approximately <strong>$331<\/strong> for the food share!<\/li>\n<li>We brought together <strong>40  volunteers<\/strong> to work together toward a common goal!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>National EPA rankings should be available soon.<\/p>\n<p>We are very pleased with the success we had in our first year! We  also know we have much <strong>room for improvement<\/strong> in the future, as our  diversion rate at this game was <strong>28% lower<\/strong> than the estimated annual  diversion rate for the OSU Corvallis campus. <strong>How do <em>you <\/em>think we can improve?
