Oregon State University\u2019s yearly Greenhouse Gas Report<\/a> helps to track the progress of OSU\u2019s Path to Carbon Neutrality<\/a>.  Data from four different inventories make up the report: Corvallis Campus, OSU-Cascades, Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC), and the Statewide Public Services. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The OSU Sustainability Office would like to feature the Eastern Oregon Agricultural Research Center (EOARC) Union<\/a>, one of 36 operation centers across Oregon that make up the \u201cStatewides\u201d inventory of the report.\u00a0 Kim Reynolds, the Facility and Budget Manager at EOARC Union has been extremely enthusiastic towards our projects! Kim tracks the Union Station’s invoices, bills, and usage throughout the year to compile data for the greenhouse gas report.\u00a0 This past year, Kim was the first to submit her data to the Sustainability Office!<\/p>\n\n\n

Established in 1901, EOARC Union is the oldest experiment station in the state!  Cattle production, nutrition research, and grazing projects are some of the main focuses at Union.  Using water from Catherine Creek, the station avoids the use of city water to grow hay and irrigate the cattle pastures.  With only 6 permanent employees, the station hires high school students during the summer to assist with irrigation and college students in the winter to support feeding and calving.  Kim shared that while springtime is the busiest, it is exceptionally beautiful, with lush greenery and newborn calves. <\/p>\n\n\n

Virtual Fencing<\/a> is a new initiative the station is working on to expand grazing.  Led by David Bohnert, director of Oregon State\u2019s EOARC Burns, Virtual Fencing could potentially help mitigate wildfires on sagebrush landscapes. Range Field Day<\/a> is an opportunity for the public to learn about current projects at EOARC and participate in discussions around the yearly theme.  EOARC Union actively engages with the community through FFA and 4-H programs, fostering strong relationships and educational opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
