As technology improves these turnover rates begin to blur together as soon the consumer is too overwhelmed with trying to keep up with the \u201clatest cutting-edge tech\u201d. According to an article written by Sander Gusinow for the Oregon Business magazine, there is a simple reason why it has become commonplace to produce and buy the next generation of technology year after year:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align:center\">Moore\u2019s Law.<br><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/_hTXI2wzpEQWmHe_BqMDQt4272w0ehvD5ZQIfOQMP8CdAXOioBTtxTeqsO7Rnd2xRbA9Roqs7XYNBbHFWQ9mVbWMzPsoDq0oCLInMb5SybOdLQDwJQHBzW42F_DqXxP0lnnFzflo\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonbusiness.com\/media\/k2\/items\/cache\/9b74d7607d5c05507b17ba191bc0ecaf_L.jpg\">Image Source<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Gordon Moore, who later on became the CEO of Intel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cs.utexas.edu\/~fussell\/courses\/cs352h\/papers\/moore.pdf\">wrote a paper<\/a> on microchips in 1965 that has become the basis for this law. In his article he observed that the number of transistors in an integrated circuit doubled every two years. For those non-technical folks out there, that essentially means that all of the parts that go into a microchip become smaller and multiply at an exponential rate. This observation became known as Moore\u2019s Law, a principle that continues to govern much of our modern technological growth and development.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align:center\">What about Oregon?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The influence of Moore\u2019s Law in the tech field has quite a large impact in Oregon as Gusinow states that \u201cmore than 11% of all wages <a href=\"https:\/\/oregonbusinessplan.org\/about-the-plan\/industry-clusters\/\">come from the tech sector<\/a>&#8230;and employees from the state\u2019s \u2018Silicon Forest\u2019 were the driving force behind Oregon\u2019s recovery from the Great Recession.\u201d Rapid growth and evolution in the electronics industry provides jobs and bolsters the Oregon economy.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite decades of momentum, there is evidence that Moore\u2019s Law might be on the decline, as the doubling rate that Moore observed has slowed to two and a half years instead of just two. This could have serious impacts in Oregon if the tech sector stagnates, as a large portion of the state\u2019s economy is dependent on the industry.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/McbiHW9LmBSts6z1qh0ImcvkxuBoWoTcb7pX85kntkp132duK_hR0koiNo9ze4m1RIiWgzpzdM6O-SIb7PPyChO_es5QBXJDHIuklTQVWlGq8XhR78-ezS2heOYxnxioK50EQizz\" alt=\"\" width=\"260\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption>Gordon Moore, Intel<br>(<a href=\"http:\/\/download.intel.com\/pressroom\/images\/events\/moores_law_40th\/Gordon_Moore\/GordonMoore_2_2005.jpg\">Image Source<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This slow down has been a long time coming though. No matter how advanced the technology is, nature has already set limits on how small something can be, and it looks like those tiny transistors are getting closer and closer to that limit. Additionally, as the size of these transistors decreased, so too has their efficiency, leading some industry members to ask the question on everyone\u2019s mind: \u201cIs it worth it?\u201d According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maastrichtuniversity.nl\/c.mody\">Cyrus C.M. Mody<\/a>, an engineering professor at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, \u201cMoore\u2019s Law became the [tech] industry standard rather than a measure of progress\u201d. This standard may be doing more harm than good to the average everyday worker and consumer.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"text-align:center\">What&#8217;s next?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Gusinow brings up an interesting point in his article: as the microchip technology nears the end of its current innovation race, there might be a new one getting warmed up. Oregon\u2019s tech sector could invest in the design of greener, more efficient, and more sustainable microchips to give them an edge over the competition. Gusinow talks with <a href=\"https:\/\/eecs.oregonstate.edu\/people\/brekken-ted\">Ted Brekken<\/a>, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science here at Oregon State University about just this. Brekken believes that the end of Moore\u2019s Law will breathe life into Oregon\u2019s sustainability sector, as there is a new opportunity to update the smart grid to focus on energy efficiency and create new products that can help responsibly sustain future generations.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/LtFvbvWwjPhZRbTORktmdkjqQrEYi203HxLAwfcT1ts2cmS_sn3fNW385xIrAvWoqspuyvlUuUiuhe8oQabJqhR9RPGPa-tbujWur67_-lhx0gaj-qMUmnO7y5Fc8NO6BWlz2Tzb\" alt=\"\" width=\"215\" height=\"299\" \/><figcaption>Ted Brekken, Oregon State University<br>(<a href=\"https:\/\/eecs.oregonstate.edu\/sites\/eecs.oregonstate.edu\/files\/facultystaff\/brekken_ted_3956_0.jpg\">Image Source<\/a>)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This bodes well for Oregon as, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/blogs\/stateline\/2017\/01\/26\/states-expected-to-continue-course-toward-clean-energy-future\">a report by the Pew Research Center<\/a>,&nbsp; a large percentage of the state\u2019s workforce has already invested in clean energy technology.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.intel.com\/biography\/michael-c-mayberry\/#gs.s8z2f9\">Mike Mayberry<\/a>, the Chief Technology Officer at Intel, whose company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/silicon-forest\/2019\/02\/intel-confirms-plans-for-huge-oregon-factory.html\">employees more than 20,000 Oregonians<\/a>, believes that while size has been a driving force of the tech sector, it\u2019s not the only one attribute that Moore\u2019s Law is applicable to.
