Water crises affect 2.8 billion people around the world at least one month out of each year. Scarcity is usually caused by climate change, increased pollution, and increased human demand for fresh water. Water scarcity is a growing concern and one that guarantees increased geopolitical conflict, like on July first, when gunfire broke out at a water scarcity riot in Iran.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <a href=\"http:\/\/engineering.oregonstate.edu\/\">Oregon State University College of Engineering<\/a> is organizing the inaugural Clean and Sustainable Water Technology Initiative workshop to be held August 6-7, 2018. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Day 1<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The workshop will kick off with the keynote address, &#8220;Urban Water Supply Reinvention for Dry Cities,\u201d given by <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.stanford.edu\/richard-luthy\">Richard G. Luthy<\/a>, Silas H. Palmer Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Director of the Engineering Research Center for Reinventing the Nation\u2019s Urban Water Infrastructure at Stanford University. Dr. Luthy\u2019s keynote will be given Monday, August 6 at 7 p.m. in the LaSells Stewart Center Construction and Engineering Hall. At the core of this venture is a collaborative community of faculty and students, working together to solve one of the one of the <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.engineeringchallenges.org\/challenges\/water.aspx\"><i>Grand Challenges for Engineering<\/i><i><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the 21st century. This effort builds on the university\u2019s strengths, to help make Oregon State a national leader in clean and sustainable water technology solutions.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Leading the initiative is <\/span><\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/cbee.oregonstate.edu\/people\/lewis-semprini\"><i>Lewis Semprini<\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, distinguished professor of environmental engineering. Several College of Engineering scholars are recognized nationally and globally for innovative research on water systems.
