World Environment Day and World Oceans Day even have the same action theme this year: prevent and reduce plastic pollution. So instead of beating yourself up for forgetting about the environment on its special day, simply double your plastic pollution prevention efforts this Friday!<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">What is World Oceans Day?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/theoceanproject.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Ocean Project <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has recognized <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldoceansday.org\/\">World Oceans Day<\/a> since 2002 and the United Nations made World Oceans Day official in 2008. The purpose of the Day is to educate the public on the importance of the Earth\u2019s oceans for humans and the rest of the ecosystem and to unite citizens of the Earth in an initiative for sustainable ocean management. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Ocean Project\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> website <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldoceansday.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">worldoceansday.org<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> serves as an educational tool by providing free resources ranging from informational posters about plastic pollution and the ecosystem to full lesson plans on plastic pollution to documentaries on the impact of plastic in our oceans. Water. Earth\u2019s large quantity of water is what makes it such a unique planet that is hospitable for a diverse array of biology (particularly humans). In addition to their majestic beauty and immense potential for recreation, <strong>our oceans provide a multitude of critical ecosystem services that we literally could not live without<\/strong> (according to the UN):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: center\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Oceans contain 97% of Earth\u2019s water and represent 99% of the living space on the planet<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Over 3 million people depend on marine biodiversity <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Oceans absorb around 30% of carbon dioxide produced by humans and generate oxygen that we breathe<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Oceans are the world\u2019s main source of protein; more than 2.6 billion people depend on the oceans as their main protein source<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many medicines are derived from the oceans<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Plastic pollution is threatening the oceans\u2019 ability to provide these services!<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: center\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">80% of ocean pollution comes from people on land<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">8 million tons of plastic is deposited in the ocean each year, where it destroys wildlife, fisheries, and tourism<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Plastic pollution kills 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals per year<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The fish that we eat are eating plastic<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center\">There is a World Oceans Day Event Near You!<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10954\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10954\" style=\"width: 495px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/ecologue\/files\/2018\/06\/8142866_2_Albatross.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10954\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/ecologue\/files\/2018\/06\/8142866_2_Albatross-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"495\" height=\"495\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10954\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Albatross screening in Portland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Join Portland Surfrider Chapter at Spirit of 77 in Portland for a free screening of the new film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Albatross <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and a post-screening discussion about ways to take action!
