This year, a\u00a02017 Senior Capstone Project Report by OSU students (CBEE 416) working with\u00a0David Eckert of the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition has released a &#8220;Comparative Analysis of Stormwater Pollutant Loads Mitigated by Contech Stormwater Filters on OSU Campus&#8221;. This project analyzed OSU&#8217;s CONTECH StormFilters, which are located around campus for the purpose of removing contaminants from storm water. According to our students, these filters <em>&#8220;use a ZPG\u2122 Media blend of zeolite, perlite, and granular activated carbon to remove total suspended solids, and to a lesser extent some soluble metals and organics.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The study came to several conclusions, seen below:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Initial results show that filters are not consistently meeting desired TSS (Total Suspended Solids) removal specifications<\/li>\n<li>Filter location\/use may affect filter performance more than age<\/li>\n<li>Fairbanks and Johnson locations are difficult to sample due to submerged outlet pipe during nominal flow conditions<\/li>\n<li>Fairbanks location appears to be plugged, there is sludge buildup and bypass during storms smaller than design store<\/li>\n<li>Kelley location operating below design flow rate of 15 gpm<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10323\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10323\" style=\"width: 398px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/ecologue\/files\/2017\/11\/Stormwater.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10323\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/ecologue\/files\/2017\/11\/Stormwater-300x116.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"398\" height=\"154\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2114\/files\/2017\/11\/Stormwater-300x116.png 300w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/2114\/files\/2017\/11\/Stormwater.png 718w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 398px) 100vw, 398px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10323\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From; Comparative Analysis of CONTECH<br \/>StormFilters on OSU Campus<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This report was sponsored by the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition, the Oregon State University Capital Planning and Facilities Services, and the Oregon State University School of Chemical, Biological, and Environmental Engineering.
