I don\u2019t consider where I live at the moment to be my only community, as I consider myself to be part of many.\u00a0 I surrounded myself with part of my new local clique when I went to the Whiteside Theater last month. \u00a0The people who gathered at this event were those who value the strength of words, nature, and culture. They helped in giving back by donating the money they didn\u2019t need. \u00a0Through the power of stor<\/span>y, I was able to discover that where I am right now is where I\u2019m supposed to be.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/magicbarrel.org\/\">The Magic Barrel: A Reading to Fight Hunger<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>sponsored by OSU&#8217;s Center for the Humanities, was a night which tugged at my heartstrings and provoked much thought. \u00a0The premise of the evening was to have various authors read excerpts of their works to bring a focus back to community and engagement. \u00a0Through \u201cthe Power of Story,\u201d the hope of the hosts was to raise money and awareness for <a href=\"http:\/\/communityservices.us\/nutrition\/detail\/category\/linn-benton-food-share\/\">Linn Benton Food Share<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The MC of the night, <a href=\"https:\/\/kareliastetzwaters.com\/\">Karelia Stetz-Waters<\/a>, captured the crowd gathered under the Whiteside Theatre\u2019s Roof with her open personality and wit.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption thumbnail alignright\" style=\"width: 106px;\">\n    <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5830d86f414fb5e9ba9e67f0\/t\/5872c1182e69cf1bd0711115\/1483915607291\/old+dogs+new+tricks.jpb?format=500w\" width=\"106\" height=\"178\" \/>\n    <figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Old Dogs, New Tricks A book of Poems by Clem Starck<\/figcaption>\n    <\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Night of Readings<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first reader, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clemstarck.com\/\">Clem Starck<\/a>, gave an emotional, thoughtful, and true to life reading of his poems which contained humor as well as wisdom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another author, <a href=\"https:\/\/pwcenter.org\/profile\/david-turkel\">David Turkel<\/a>, presented to the audience a quite unique piece: a one-woman show, monologue-driven rendition of Agamemnon set in West Virginia, originally produced for a French audience by a British theater company. \u00a0What started off as a humorous<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">setting, with the accent and all, the writer delivered an emotion-packed monologue of the one-woman show with the feel of the original Greek tragedy. \u00a0A difficult feat marvelously pulled off.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Poet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bonniearning.com\/\">Bonnie Arning<\/a> read poems from her newly released work <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Escape Velocity. \u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The pieces she read were powerful and true, mainly explorations of her own experiences.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption thumbnail alignleft\" style=\"width: 129px;\">\n    <a href=\"http:\/\/johndaniel-author.net\/books\/of-earth\/index.php\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/johndaniel-author.net\/images\/of-earth_250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"129\" height=\"193\" \/><\/a>\n    <figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Of Earth: New and Selected Poems by John Daniel<\/figcaption>\n    <\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johndaniel-author.net\/\">John Daniel<\/a>, an author who awoke the Oregonian in me when he said, \u201crain wakes the land\/rain is home,\u201d is also an Oregonian wannabe, yet he described the landscape like a true native.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The showstopper of the evening, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.riverwalking.com\/piano-tide-a-novel.html\">Kathleen Dean Moore,<\/a> local celebrity, was an absolute delight to see on stage. If you already knew Kathleen Dean Moore as a writer, you need to experience<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption thumbnail alignright\" style=\"width: 126px;\">\n    <a href=\"http:\/\/www.riverwalking.com\/piano-tide-a-novel.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.riverwalking.com\/images\/bookcovers\/Piano-Tide.jpg\" width=\"126\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a>\n    <figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Piano Tide: A Novel by Kathleen Dean Moore<\/figcaption>\n    <\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">her as a performer. Kathy read from her work <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Piano Tide <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as Audrey Perkins sang and hummed next to her. \u00a0I discovered that the best way to read a work by Moore is to heave her read to you with the accompaniment of Audrey\u2019s clear voice. \u00a0If you can\u2019t have the real thing, at least read her works with her voice running through your head, it is not the same experience, but it\u2019s close enough. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">By the end of the evening, over $9,000 were raised which equates to over 64,000 meals for the food share to donate.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since\u00a0I have moved across the country and spent a few months in my new home, I have been pondering what it means to be part of a community. \u00a0Is it being in a group of people who simply happen live in the same place or can it be so much more?
