David Elmer – Blog Post #4

This week I would like to talk about being overwhelmed with choice.

As a person who is just starting their career in software engineering, it can be paralyzing to think about the potential career paths that are available. There are so many specialties, how does one go about deciding which direction they want to take when they have the limited skills of a soon-to-be-new grad. My work on the team project this week got me excited about several options. I spent a lot of time with tutorials on Ionic and React which got me interested in front end engineering. I also spent some time working on the database for our project and this got me interested in databases and back ends. Then I watched the videos about white-hat hackers in this week’s introduction and that got me interested in security. All of these different paths makes me want to stay in school and take all of the electives this program has to offer! (and then go for the security certificate) But, in reality, I have to leave school and venture into the professional world. So, how does one decide what field to choose? I guess as a new engineer, that is part of what you have to figure out along the way.

Like with so many choices in life, I just have to make a choice and then learn from it.
