Hi, and welcome to my blog! I am a CS student at Oregon State University currently participating in the capstone course. Future posts will likely be related to our project, but since we are just starting out the course I thought that I would just introduce myself with this post.
I am originally from Green Bay, Wisconsin, but I have lived in New York City for about twenty years now. My current career is as a stagehand for Broadway plays and musicals. I install and operate computer controlled scenery, which is part of what inspired my interest in software engineering. There are four main scenery shops that build and automate scenery for Broadway. Each shop has their own proprietary software for controlling scenery. As an installer, programmer, and operator, I have become very familiar with the ins and outs of each system and have had fascinating conversations with their designers about the choices they have made and the limitations of their current software. The more I learn through this program, the more I realize that these companies could benefit from a software engineer who also comes from a technical theatre background. There are other aspects of live entertainment that could benefit from the same such as automated lighting systems, audio processing, projection mapping, show control systems, and many more. After graduation I am hoping that I can fulfill this need!
I am excited to participate in this course and to hear about all of the exciting projects that everybody is doing. Until next time!
