{"id":88,"date":"2017-04-12T12:09:18","date_gmt":"2017-04-12T19:09:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/cutworm\/?p=88"},"modified":"2019-05-02T16:12:22","modified_gmt":"2019-05-02T23:12:22","slug":"winter-also-spring-cutworm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/cutworm\/2017\/04\/12\/winter-also-spring-cutworm\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter and also SPRING cutworm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-89 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/cutworm\/files\/2017\/04\/WtoS.jpg?resize=298%2C169\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The arrival of Spring brings with it opportunity to discuss <em>Noctua pronuba<\/em> and its potential to affect this year&#8217;s plantings.<\/p>\n<p>The extremely WET winter and recent mild temperatures mean that cutworm pressure could be higher than normal this year.<\/p>\n<p>As seen in the figure below, crop damage can occur throughout the winter, AND ALSO INTO SPRING.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-90\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/cutworm\/files\/2017\/04\/lifecycle.gif?resize=485%2C364\" alt=\"\" width=\"485\" height=\"364\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To scout for damage, look for areas of clipped grass or missing seedlings. Dig to at least 2&#8243; and sort through the soil. Most cutworms are subterranean but some can also climb up to feed on foliage.
