By working on current relevant public health issues under the close supervision and mentorship of experienced professionals, students apply classroom learning to practical problems in a closely matched practicum. In the process, they learn critical skills needed to excel in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The goals of the program are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To orient students to the principles and practices of public health planning, research, administration and evaluation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To broaden students&#8217; concept of public health by increasing their awareness of the needs, challenges and career opportunities in this field.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To assist the Health Department in recruiting skilled, professional candidates with proven potential.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>During the summer, in addition to direct hands-on experience, interns are exposed to a rigorous curriculum of seminars, workshops, and other activities to broaden their understanding of how we promote the health of New Yorkers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more about applying, read&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/doh\/downloads\/pdf\/hr\/hrtp-guide.pdf\">Getting Started: An Instruction Guide for Student Applicants<\/a>&nbsp;(PDF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sessions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>HRTP operates in three sessions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Summer Session:<\/strong>&nbsp;June\u2013August<br>Full-time: Maximum 35 hours per week<br>Part-time: Minimum 20 hours per week<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fall Session*:<\/strong>&nbsp;September\u2013December<br>Part-time only: Between 10 and 20 hours per week<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Winter\/Spring*:<\/strong>&nbsp;January\u2013May<br>Part-time only: Between 10 and 20 hours per week<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>*&nbsp;<em>NYC residency is required for the fall\/spring sessions.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Funding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In most placements, financial support is available for HRTP students. Students who are unable to receive funding may opt to volunteer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eligibility Criteria<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Applicants must be enrolled as a matriculated undergraduate, graduate or professional student in a degree program at an accredited college or university in the U.S.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recent graduates are ineligible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applicants must be in good academic standing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Residency in NYC is required for the fall and winter\/spring sessions. Only completed applications will be considered.
