{"id":733,"date":"2020-04-22T17:16:10","date_gmt":"2020-04-22T17:16:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/collegeofforestry\/?p=733"},"modified":"2020-04-22T17:16:11","modified_gmt":"2020-04-22T17:16:11","slug":"student-profile-joshua-stump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/collegeofforestry\/2020\/04\/22\/student-profile-joshua-stump\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Profile: Joshua Stump"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>Major: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forestry.oregonstate.edu\/undergraduate-programs\/renewable-materials\">Renewable Materials<\/a>; Year: Senior<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Renewable Materials senior Joshua Stump is hungry for international experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He landed at Oregon State after earning a Jazz Piano Performance degree from Arizona State University and spending five years in the United States Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"655\" height=\"457\" src=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3115\/files\/2020\/04\/042020_focus_student1_hl.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-734\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3115\/files\/2020\/04\/042020_focus_student1_hl.jpg 655w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3115\/files\/2020\/04\/042020_focus_student1_hl-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 655px) 100vw, 655px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMusic was my passion growing up, but my first experience in college was a hard lesson for me about what happens when you don\u2019t take education seriously,\u201d Stump says. \u201cWith mounting student debt hanging over my head, I joined the Navy to jump start my life financially.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After five years, he was ready to move on to the next stage and decided to follow an interest of his since childhood: sustainability and the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always had enormous respect for nature and other forms of life,\u201d says Stump, \u201cMy dad took me to Mount Rainier National Park as a child, and that made a huge impression on me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After researching degrees at Oregon State, Stump chose the renewable materials program, which he knew would lead him toward a career promoting the use of natural solutions for products we use every day, including sustainable building practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stump completed an internship with Boise Cascade during summer 2018. He\u2019s also an apprentice piano restorer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his Navy service, Stump traveled to Australia and several Asian countries. He has not visited Europe yet, even though he is extremely interested in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have always been very interested in German culture,\u201d Stump says. \u201cI have family heritage there, and I have always been fascinated with their work ethic and interest in art and music. I think Germany would be an amazing place to live.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is planning to participate in the short-term, faculty-led Alpine Europe program. The program, offered through the college&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forestry.oregonstate.edu\/international\">Office of International Programs<\/a>, takes students to the European Alps and provides a holistic view of the sustainable wood products industry. He is also interested in completing an internship focused on piano restoration in Austria<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am hoping to combine my interests,\u201d Stump says. \u201cPlaying piano has been what has defined me since childhood, and I would love to focus on alternatives for soundboards in pianos. They are made exclusively with Sitka spruce.
