{"id":685,"date":"2020-03-04T17:38:39","date_gmt":"2020-03-04T17:38:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/collegeofforestry\/?p=685"},"modified":"2020-03-04T17:40:22","modified_gmt":"2020-03-04T17:40:22","slug":"new-endowment-in-forest-biotechnology-created","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/collegeofforestry\/2020\/03\/04\/new-endowment-in-forest-biotechnology-created\/","title":{"rendered":"New Endowment in Forest Biotechnology Created"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"476\" src=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3115\/files\/2020\/03\/Biotech_pic1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-686\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3115\/files\/2020\/03\/Biotech_pic1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3115\/files\/2020\/03\/Biotech_pic1-300x143.jpg 300w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3115\/files\/2020\/03\/Biotech_pic1-768x366.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Oregon State University and the College of Forestry has created a new endowment based on a major donation from the Institute of Forest Biosciences, formerly the Institute of Forest Biotechnology.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To honor the Institute\u2019s long legacy of identifying ecologically and\nsocially responsible paths for the use of biotechnologies in forestry, the\ndonation will be used to create the Institute of Forest Biosciences Endowment\nfor Forest Biotechnology and related Biosciences.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the wishes of the donors, the earnings from the endowment will\nbe used to fund travel by students and early career scientists to present their\nwork at national and international conferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"342\" src=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3115\/files\/2020\/03\/Strauss2020_small.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-687\" srcset=\"https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3115\/files\/2020\/03\/Strauss2020_small.jpg 250w, https:\/\/osu-wams-blogs-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/blogs.dir\/3115\/files\/2020\/03\/Strauss2020_small-219x300.jpg 219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>After recently ceasing operation, the Institute donated its remaining funds to OSU in recognition of the work of the college and the career of Distinguished Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.forestry.oregonstate.edu\/people\/strauss-steven\">Steve Strauss,<\/a> who has had a long association with the Institute.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a collaborator and advisor, Strauss\u2019 association with the Institute included\nhosting conferences, writing publications, and serving as Chair of the Science\nCommittee for the Forest Health Initiative. The initiative focused on\nrestoration of the American Chestnut and was organized in close association\nwith the Institute.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strauss was also the first scientist to be recognized by the Institute\nas \u201cForest Biotechnologist of the Year,\u201d which over time recognized several of\nthe leading forest biotechnology scientists from around the globe.
