Act accordingly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Travel informed<\/strong>!<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Be comfortable chatting about US topics and current events<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>People in many parts of the world are very informed about US politics.&nbsp;You will be asked about the president, professional sports and pop culture. This knowledge is equally important when encountering other travelers from around the&nbsp;world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What relationship does the US&nbsp;have with the countries you plan&nbsp;to visit?&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Has the US had any political or economic impact?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Learn a bit about local politics<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who is the president? Any major current events?&nbsp;What drives the economy? Gauge the local opinion and your experience against the international media\u2019s narrative.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u2026and its neighboring countries<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you\u2019re crossing international borders, learn about&nbsp;the relationships they have. Think critically about those relationships when you notice&nbsp;differences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u2026and the history of the region<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What influence do the indigenous people have on&nbsp;the culture, language and history? Are indigenous languages still spoken? Learn the language!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>or at least \u2014 to navigate it<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Learn how to say your&nbsp;occupation and area of study.&nbsp;Learn the currency and numbers. Learn the names of, and how to pronounce, geographic features like cities, bus stations, mountains, roads, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you can\u2019t articulate what you\u2019d like, a smile can at the least end a conversation on a positive note.Think you\u2019ve mastered the local language? Get a haircut from a non-English speaking&nbsp;barber\/stylist.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Upon your arrival\u2026<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><em>Explore<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Try new food with an open mind<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ask locals were to eat.&nbsp;Understand caloric intake may come on a different schedule and at different doses throughout the day.  Try the local spirits, responsibly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Prepare for the unexpected<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Store away a copy of&nbsp;your passport and a crisp US $50&nbsp;bill in a place separate from your other documents. If you\u2019re concerned about theft, keep your passport on you (not in a bag,&nbsp;not in a back pocket), especially in crowded areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Remain confident.&nbsp;Your safety is&nbsp;important. Don\u2019t compromise it&nbsp;for concern of appearing rude. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always carry emergency toilet paper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Blend in<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>travel light \u2014 in attitude and luggage<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In many places, the privilege of international travel (taking time off work, buying airfare, leaving family, acquiring visas) is an opportunity reserved for the elite.&nbsp;Be understanding of this.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cultivate an attitude of curiosity, particularly in situations you find odd.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019re concerned about theft, leave&nbsp;flashy electronics, jewelry and designer clothing at home. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the exchange isn\u2019t easy to work out in your head, jot down a&nbsp;few currency conversions. Carry small bills.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t expect every business to take credit cards, USD or big bills in the local currency.&nbsp;Break big bills&nbsp;at hotels or&nbsp;banks. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your lodgings require, do not flush toilet paper\u2014or be prepared to face embarrassing consequences.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Upon your return\u2026<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Make it a memorable trip &#8211; stay in touch<\/em><\/strong>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When appropriate, exchange&nbsp;contact information with new friends.&nbsp;Social media is a fantastic tool to remain connected with the world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Retain and relive the impact of your experiences<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>&nbsp;Journal while abroad.
