How to find a job as a new grad (a study in persistence)

Everyone knows how hard the job search is, and sometimes it feels like it’s even harder for people in the tech industry. If you haven’t “focused” in on one aspect of your Computer Science degree, it can sometimes feel daunting to look at all these jobs you could “maybe” do, but nothing that you’re completely confident in.

Dear reader, I’m going to give a few tips on how to overcome these woes.

  1. Stick the required / main requested skill somewhere in your resume.

It only takes a little bit of time, and if you get a call back, it only takes a bit of time to take a look at whatever technology / language they’re using. It could pay off in a big way.

2. Play to your strengths

If you see a position detailing a software stack you’ve worked with extensively in a recent class, then excellent! If not, don’t be afraid to put on projects that don’t necessarily have to do with what you’re applying for. Seeing that you’re able to accomplish learning a technology stack, will prove that you’d be able to do it again in this new role.

3. Shiny new grad syndrome

If you’re like me and going to be graduating recently, there are programs that companies are doing trying to snatch you up. No, really! Just google “year and quarter I’m graduating CS jobs”, and you’ll find companies from FAANG to the defense industry who specifically are looking for people that will be graduating in the next couple of months. These jobs are looking for someone with just your experience level, so try to seek them out.

Most of all, just keep applying. Do it. Don’t worry so much about failure, remember that it’s a numbers game, remember you got your degree to get a job, and now is the time to start!
