I grew up in Eagle River, Alaska (near Anchorage) in a landscape sculpted by glaciers and interesting sedimentary processes. I enjoy working in &#8220;process sedimentology&#8221; because it combines elements of fluid dynamics, sedimentology, and oceanography and allows us to explore how sediments move through a system over human timescales, and how they ultimately contribute to the geologic record. She has a B.S. in Marine Sciences&nbsp;and minors in Geology&nbsp;and Wildlife Ecology &amp; Conservation from UF. Her undergraduate research used strontium isotopes from glacial&nbsp;and deglacial stream waters of southwest Greenland to track the progression of sediment&nbsp;and rock weathering with ice sheet retreat. Maya participated in the 2025 NSF Coastal Freeze research survey on R\/V Sikuliaq and is studying suspended sediment properties in Arctic coastal environments and new sea ice for her honors thesis project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Undergraduate Research Assistants<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Abby Simmons<\/strong>, Oceanography major &#8211; Abby is assisting with sediment and isotope analyses for the ONR Tidal Flat Geotechnical Investigations project and participated in field work at Cedar Key, FL in 2026.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>JD Freivogel<\/strong>, Nuclear Science major &#8211; JD is assisting us with sediment sample and isotope processing for the ONR Tidal Flat Geotechnical Investigations project<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Moises Acosta<\/strong>, Environmental Sciences major &#8211; Moises is an intern through the URSA program who is assisting with coastal sediment sample processing and gamma analyses of Pb-210 and Th-234 profiles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Xoxa Bell<\/strong>, Oceanography major &#8211; Xoxa is assisting with sediment sample and isotope processing for the ONR Tidal Flat Geotechnical Investigations project <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nicolette Eusebi,<\/strong> Geology major &#8211; Nicolette is assisting with sediment sample and isotope processing for the ONR Tidal Flat Geotechnical Investigations project <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lab Alumni<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><strong>Dr. Molly Keogh, Postdoctoral Fellow (OSU)<\/strong> &#8211; (2023-2025) Molly studied distributions of Pb-210 surface activities and Pb-210-derived sedimentation rates in Arctic and Antarctic shelf settings. She leveraged existing datasets as well as the wealth of cores archived at the OSU-MGR. Molly advanced to a position with OSU Extension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><strong>Sean Finney, MS student (OSU)<\/strong> &#8211; (2024-2026) Sean worked on a professional masters in Geography and Geospatial Science. He leveraged USGS data records to study multidecadal patterns of sediment export from Oregon coastal streams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><strong>Grace Meyer, Lab Manager (OSU)<\/strong> &#8211; (2023-2024) Grace supervised Pb-210 and related sediment analyses, worked on ongoing openOBS development, wrote SOPs for the lab group, and also worked part-time in Dr. Jenn Fehrenbacher&#8217;s foram lab. Grace advanced to a federal analyst position in fall 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><strong>Adrian Heath, MSc 2024 (OSU)<\/strong> &#8211; Adrian analyzed short gravity cores and multibeam data from the Alaskan Beaufort Shelf and found that the inner shelf is erosional and the middle shelf is non-depositional over multidecadal timescales, in spite of seasonal mid-shelf depositional patterns. <em>Thesis: Sedimentation and Erosion on an Arctic Continental Shelf: Harrison Bay and Colville River Delta, Alaska<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><strong>Caroline Cooper, MSc 2023 (UNC)<\/strong> &#8211; Caroline worked to develop a depth-averaged profile model of arctic delta development in Delft3D. Post-graduation she advanced to an environmental compliance position with the State of South Carolina. <em>Thesis: Modeling the effects of sea ice on arctic delta evolution: A case study on the Colville River Delta, AK<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><strong>Tyler Souza, MSc 2022 (UNC) &#8211; <\/strong>Tyler collected and analyzed a suite of sediment cores from the Coos Bay Estuary (Oregon) and used Pb-210 isotope profiles to quantify sediment accumulation rates. Post-graduation he advanced to a coastal staff scientist position with Geosyntec Consultants in North Carolina. <em>Thesis<\/em>: <em>A century of disturbance: How anthropogenic modification has affected sediment accumulation patterns in the Coos Estuary in the last 100 years<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\"><strong>John Malito, MSc 2021 (UNC) &#8211; <\/strong>John evaluated the sediment-transport dynamics of arctic continental shelves in Delft3D in order to test the sensitivity to a more energetic wave climate.
