Writing Exercise #2

Based on the information from the article Sarid and Gao 2011, there are some strain of HPV that are more important to create vaccines for than others. It would be ideal to create vaccines for all types of HPV. However, the production of vaccines is expensive and takes time. It is important to narrow in on strains of HPV that could do the most damage, such as causing cervical cancer. Plus, creating vaccines for certain strains of HPV could lead to a better understanding of how to make vaccines for HPV. The HPV strains that are most important to create vaccines for are 31 and 45. These two strains along with 16 and 18 (which already have vaccines) make up 80% of cervical cancer. A vaccine made for the 31 and 45 strains would cause cervical cancer rates would greatly lower.

The best time to give these vaccinations is at a young age. HPV is a sexually transmitted disease and giving the vaccines to children could greatly lower their chance of getting HPV as adults and developing cervical cancer.
