How much influence does social networking have on the job application process and your career?  What does your social media persona convey about you? In today’s competitive job market these are valid questions to think about. Okay, so you’ve applied for a perfect position with a dream company and got that coveted interview.  You supplied references with a resume, and expect the company will contact them; but be aware that another source of background information about you is now available to employers through social media.  This includes the interactive places where you connect with family, friends and associates such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.  There are also places where you can “strut your stuff” with video-sharing on YouTube and blog pages.  However, whatever you choose to put out there is available for the public to see, including potential employers.

This recent phenomenon has become a valuable screening tool for employers, who in the past did not have this kind of access to personal information.  Statistics vary slightly, but generally they seem to agree that between 40% and 50% are now using social media information in some form, and the number is growing. You can make this work in your favor, or if you’re not careful, it can work against you.  According to a survey of 2,667 HR professionals compiled by CareerBuilder.com, “eighteen percent of employers reported they have found content on social networking sites that caused them to hire the candidate.” However, up to 53% surveyed admitted they disqualified a candidate because of content!

One way to take advantage of social media is your presentation, and an obvious place to start is Facebook. Think of it as dressing professionally for an interview, only virtually.  It’s a great way to show your best side. Consider what your page, your wall, or your pictures might be saying to potential employers if they were to visit.  Are you presenting an appealing, professional persona? Also, your page is a great place to express additional professional interests and relevant experiences that you weren’t able to address on a resume or cover letter because of space restrictions.  A positive appearance will speak volumes to someone who is interested in hiring you.  And in today’s job market, a virtual professional look is as important as a first impression, and could give you a serious advantage over the competition.

If you think there may be images or conversations on your page that a potential employer might view as undesirable, consider making some changes, such as making the information private, but also take advantage of visibility that can effectively work in your favor. If you’re unsure about some of the elements ask a parent or advisor, or call us at Career Services.  If you are serious about your career goals and getting hired, this could make the difference in whether or not you get the job!

Does the thought of an 8:00 to 5:00 office job make you yawn?  Do you become restless thinking about performing routine tasks?  Perhaps you are in need of a unique job!  I recently stumbled upon the book Nice Job! The Guide to Cool, Odd, Risky, and Gruesome Ways to Make a Living. If you are determined to lead a less routine lifestyle, this book may be for you.  To peak your interest, I have included five of my favorite job positions for you to consider.

1.  Christmas Tree Farmer
A green thumb paired with a business savvy attitude makes for a successful Christmas tree farmer.  Today’s holiday trees sell for about $35 a tree.  Earning around $4,000 an acre, one could earn a comfortable living harvesting a 15 acre Christmas tree farm.  A successful farmer should be patient, have a background in marketing, and be knowledgeable of the land and farming procedures.  For more information, visit www.christree.org.

2.  Product Name Developer
The best marketing strategy a company can have is to find a catchy name for its products.  In this position, you would be responsible for brainstorming and generating lists of names for the new products of companies.  While each name suggested only earns about $1.00 each, a full time namer employed for a high-level company could bring in a six-figure salary.  Knowledge of linguistics and languages is helpful, creativity is common, and working to meet deadlines is a must.  Flexible hours and working in any environment are enjoyed by employees of this title.

3.  The Real World & Road Rules Editor
MTV’s real life soap operas aren’t captured as they appear.  A skilled film editor works through hours of tape to determine the best segments to include in each 22 minute film episode.  A person in this position needs a great sense of drama and an understanding of human behavior.  An eye for juicy and interesting subject matter is a must with film and script experience being helpful.  A perk of the job: you always know what will be happening before the rest of the viewing audience!

4.  Ice Cream Flavor Developer
Perhaps my favorite job: tasting and evaluating lots and lots of ice cream.  Ice cream flavor developers begin at a starting salary of $25,000 a year with opportunities to grow to $50,000.  Candidates for this position have sensitive, evaluative taste buds, are creative, and have the ability to deal with media.  Developers are involved in quality control, product development, and the training of ice cream sales people.  However, four to five hours a day can be expected to be spent on the tasting of ice cream.

5.  Bicycle Messenger
Bicycle messengers serve in both big cities and small communities as quick deliverers of packages, letters, and time-sensitive documents.  They can expect to bring home $500 a week before taxes while putting on 20 to 60 miles of bike travel per day.  Agility, quick-wittedness, and a powerful survival instinct make up the best bicycle messengers.  Keeping fit while on the job is a welcomed perk of this adventurous position.

Preliminary results are in, college hiring is up 21%. “Employers expect to hire 21 percent more new college grads this year than they did last year, according to preliminary results of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Job Outlook Spring Update survey.

Back in August, employers projected a 13.5 percent increase in college hiring for the 2010-11 academic year. However, since that time, other NACE surveys have pointed to college hiring gaining momentum. For example, NACE’s hiring index, conducted monthly October through February, showed an increase in the percent of employers planning to hire more new college graduates. In addition, NACE’s monthly recruiting activity index pointed to increased activity on campus: In fact, the index hit an all-time high in February, foreshadowing a greater increase in hiring for the college Class of 2011 than originally anticipated.

This is great news for graduating students! For students looking to find a job in 2012 – fall college recruiting also looks positive. “It’s early, but signs are good for fall recruiting”, according to results of NACE’s Job Outlook 2011 Spring Update survey.

Nearly 29 percent of employers that responded report plans to increase their fall 2011 recruiting over last year, and 41 percent plan to recruit at the same level.

NACE will poll employers this summer to gather more-detailed hiring projections for the Class of 2012.

Anne will be leaving Career Services and starting a new life. “I am having a baby, and plan to learn everything I can about my new job as a Mom.  Then I hope to ease back into working in the area of career or student development–maybe even at OSU,” said Lapour. Anne said that she most of all valued the people, both her colleagues and students that she worked with. “I loved how everyday was different, and I could expect to learn as much from my students as I hope they learned from me.” Even though she will be in Eugene, she will always be a beaver. Anne would like to thank her colleagues and friends here at OSU, she also shared one of her favorite quotes:

Oregon State University will hold its first spring Green Career Day during Earth Week. The event takes place April 21, from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom. Green employers will be showcasing their sustainable efforts, networking with OSU students, and some will be highlighting employment/internships. The event will help students learn about career paths and strategies for entering the green job market as well as assist green employers to connect with OSU students.

Green Career Day combines education with professional development for students.  Students will learn about green companies and how to get a job in this area through a variety of workshops and also connect with local and national green organizations at the event. The workshops on Green Career Day include:

Green Jobs: Alumni Panel Discussion – Q&A with OSU alums who are now working at green companies.

What is a green job and how do I get one? – Leonard Adler, the Founder of Green Jobs Network, will speak about the green industry and how to connect people who are seeking jobs that focus on environmental or social responsibility with jobs and career development resources.

Here at Career Services, not only do we offer professional one-on-one career counseling, resume/cover letter critiques, mock interviews, and career assessments, but we also house a new well-renovated, cozy space that serves as the Career Resource Library. The new Resource Library has been a great addition to the lobby of Career Services and it offers a variety or career-related resources that specifically help with career development, career decision-making, and career exploration.

If you have  an interest in exploring the world via an internship abroad or volunteering in another country, we have information that helps you to explore many different types of career related work that you can do. Peace Corps is one of the programs that is supported by OSU Career Services and we have a Peace Corps Representative who specializes in helping students who have a passion in gaining an experience aboard. Working for the federal government can be a pretty sweet deal, as it is usually stable work and has attractive pay and benefits.  When most people hear “federal jobs” they probably think of the military, or “something in Washington D.C.” but the fact is that there are more opportunities available in a wider range of careers than you might expect, all across the United States and abroad.  Examples include jobs like museum curators and dental assistants, as well as more traditional analyst or administrative positions.  The trick is being able to GET one of these jobs.

The first step in federal job hunting is USAJobs.gov.  This website is a huge repository of information on federal jobs, and you can search or browse postings by agency, location, or occupation.  For those who have not had much experience reading federal job postings, it can be intimidating, but do not despair, you can get through it!  Federal job postings are often much longer and more detailed than postings from the private sector – the federal government is such a huge employer that a rigid hiring structure helps ensure a smooth and fair process for all parties involved, even if seems a bit daunting on the applicant side!

Your job posting will contain all the information you need, but it can be hard to decode at first.  According to a high level 30 year veteran of government human resources management who wanted to remain anonymous, understanding a federal job posting is like diagramming a sentence in elementary school – you need to break it down to its base components and address each one of them in your application materials.  Postings generally have a job summary, duties, required qualifications, how to apply (and how that application is evaluated), as well as other logistical information like salary, location, and when you can apply.  Make sure you read the entire posting.  I cannot stress this enough, MAKE SURE YOU READ THE ENTIRE POSTING.  If you miss even 1 piece of required information in your application, it will be considered incomplete and you will not make the first cut.  Many postings talk about required KSA’s – Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities.  Be sure to fully explain each aspect of your experience and qualifications because the person screening your application on the other side may know nothing about the job you are applying for, and is evaluating applications based purely on a criteria sheet.  Don’t assume that a vague statement like “kept balance sheets” is going to fully communicate the nuanced complexities of developing and maintaining a budget for your organization, or that “ran cash register” will fully explain how you were the first point of contact and customer service for the majority of clientele at your previous position.  Be explicit when describing how your experience addresses the required KSA’s.  Most application materials are run through a computer to count how many keywords are used before a person even looks at them, so make sure you are using industry-related terms and the vocabulary found in the posting.

Federal job postings will likely have some specialized terminology that might be confusing at first too, especially when discussing pay grade or wage scale.  You might see something like “GS-09 required” and wonder what it means.  Your GS-XX is your level of education and experience – If you are just starting out, you can qualify for jobs at the GS-02 level with a high school diploma or as little as 3 months of general work experience. Starting at GS-05, jobs generally require 1 year of specialized experience to qualify. When you have a degree but no specialized experience in a career field, you are eligible for appointment at the GS-05 pay scale.  In general, to qualify for jobs at the GS-07 and higher grades, your background must have included experience closely related to the work to be performed in the job for which you are applying.  Education can often substitute for experience – You can usually qualify for GS-09 positions on the basis of a master’s degree, and for GS-11 positions on the basis of a doctorate.

Applying to federal jobs can take a long time, especially if you’re applying for a sensitive job with a security clearance or need an extensive background check.  The federal government generally tries to fill positions within about 45 days of a posting’s closing date, but it can be much longer than that.  Be prepared to wait for several months to learn whether you made the cut.  Keep a file with copies of all your application materials so that when you finally are contacted to move onto the next step, you can review your materials and feel confident moving forward.  Unless the posting specifically says otherwise, follow up on your application to indicate your continued interest in the position, and learn what their hiring timeline looks like and when you can reasonably expect to hear back from them.

If you’re not quite ready to begin actively searching for federal jobs, you can still do some prep work.  Look for volunteer & internship opportunities that will give you valuable hands-on experience in your field of interest.  Cultivate mentor relationships with your faculty and current employers to help you develop personally & professionally.  Schedule an appointment with a career counselor to discuss your career goals & interests and how to best use your time at OSU to accomplish them. Start building your resume now because it is easier to continually update it as you go than it is to write it from scratch. (Career Services has drop-in resume critiques M-Th from 1-4pm!)  The sooner you start preparing for your federal job search, the easier it will be!

Oregon State University offers lots of opportunities to study abroad. But the thing is where to begin? First of all you should start by looking at the study abroad portion on the website. It offers places you can choose to study in, what requirements you need and how to start planning and saving money. We all know that studying in a different country isn’t cheap, so by looking early for scholarships and grants is a must, but not to worry, your abroad counselor will go over all of that with you on a one-on-one meeting.

Some things to remember, you must keep up your GPA maintain at least a 3.0 and above. Be organized and meet all due dates, start planning a year a head. Make connections with people who are from your desired country choice. Do research of the place you plan on studying at. Learn the language a little bit! It’s going to take some time to get everything planned but with good help and attitude it will happen. Explore the world while you learn, that’s what makes life so exciting!

The Career Fair is a great place to talk to potential employers. You know you will have the opportunity to talk to many employers, but how exactly do you turn the Career Fair into a job? Below are some ways you can stand out!

  • Dress for Success- Appearance plays a big part in the way that potential employers sees you. Body language is 55% of what employers use to select who they want to work for them. When it comes to the Career Fair it is important that you are looking your best. You want to stand out from others who aren’t looking professional and make it easier for employers to lean towards you. For men, a suit would be ideal but slacks, a button up shirt and a tie also work. For women, a suit (pants or skirt are fine) are also ideal, but you can also pair pants with a professional-looking blouse, blazer or sweater and make sure to wear a comfortable yet classy shoe (either flat or pumps are appropriate).
  • Resumes and Cover Letters– Having a strong resume and cover letter gives you a chance to stand out after meeting employers at the Career Fair. Employers get stacks of resumes after Career Fairs and you want to make sure that yours stands out. Format is important but it is more important to tailor your experience to the company or organization you will be talking to.
  • Be Prepared– There are many ways you should prepare yourself for the Career Fair. Doing research about a company or organization that you are interested in is very important. It is not a good idea to approach an employer and ask them what they do. You want to be prepared to talk to them about why you are interested in their company or organization and the different ways that you can fill their needs. You also want to prepare your “30 second spiel,” which highlights your resume, skills, and interests and it is always good to ask questions.
  • Follow up – After talking to an employer, ask for his/her business card and make sure to follow up with an email thanking them for their time and that you look forward to talking to them again in the future. You could even set up an informational interview which could get you connected to even more people.

These are some ways that you can turn a Career Fair into a job. Don’t be afraid to think about it as you interviewing employers to see if they fit your needs. You want to make sure you go in with a game plan and confidence, once you do that you will be ahead of everyone else.

The Office of Community and Diversity has a Multicultural Resource guide that directs you to an office on campus that can further help you explore areas you are interested in.

This office also helps you transition into a career after college by offering the PROMISE (Professional and Managerial Internships in State Employment) program (see office website).

This is an internship program that gives you an opportunity to gain skills in a professional office in/ around Corvallis. Included in the program, are professional development workshops. Finally it wraps up with a Poster Galleria, celebrating what you have learned and the projects accomplished.

I can personally recommend it; I was one of three interns for OSU’s Business Affairs Office. For me it was a good way to continue professional etiquette in an office and practice and improve my communication skills. I was stationed in the ID Center and some of the projects that I completed were: Creating a workflow during busy hours in the summer, organization of a database and compiling a card list for departments at OSU, translating brochures from English to Spanish, and many other duties. Aside from that there were a variety of different jobs other interns did with the City of Corvallis, Human Resources, Video production and many more. PROMISE also included workshops to improve on interpersonal communications and also got to hear from professionals of color from local companies, such as Hewlett Packard.

The way I have been able to find interesting jobs that allowed me to contribute my college experience and skills have all been from being a part of a Listserve! Specifically, the Educational Opportunities Program (EOP) and College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) list serves. Currently I receive e-mails from 4-5 list serves. It is helpful to join your College’s list serv, a club or student organization list serv and different departments list servs around campus. You never know what will show up! So put yourself out there and explore departments to see how you can begin your career.
