Food safety recalls of branded food products

Research advisor: Professor Jeta Rudi-Polloshka, Michigan State University, rudipoll@msu.edu

Food safety recalls and outbreaks happen frequently in the US marketplace. A subset of the recalls is due to pathogen contamination. Food safety recalls lead to substantial negative outcomes for both consumers and producers. In this project, we will explore the food safety recalls of branded food products. Specifically, we will analyze how media and social media spread information about recalls of branded food products. In doing so, we will explore implications for both producers and consumers. The deliverable will be a brief case study written for undergraduate student audiences, and a presentation at the AAEA annual meeting in Kansas City, MO.
