introduction
I always struggle with writing introductions because I am not really sure what to say, but I will give it a shot.
about me
Hello, my name is Brayden Edwards. I am currently a student at Oregon State University (OSU), working towards a bachelors in Applied Computer Science with my applied option being AI. I am also in the Accelerated masters Program at OSU, so I am actively working towards a masters degree in AI as well. My Masters advisor is Dr. Weng-Keen Wong.
I am 24 years old, married, and have one dog. My hobbies include school (which I spend nearly all my time doing), reading, gaming (when I am not in school), and spending time with family.
my academic journey
My academic journey is a rocky one, but to summarize it briefly: I was a terrible student in high school (finished with a 1.5 GPA) and had no intension of going to college. Because of some of my wife and I’s family goals, I decided that I would consider college in 2021. I ended up attending an online summer course at Southwestern Oregon Community College (SWOCC) and did really well; I also learned a lot and had fun doing it. I then decided to attend SWOCC full time, where I obtained my associates degree in 2023. Upon completing that, I began attending OSU. I have now completely fallen in love with learning and couldn’t imagine a world where I didn’t attend college.
favorite school subjects
I had to create a section to ensure that math gets the proper shout out. Yes, math is great and if you don’t like math, you should. I also love the algorithm side of CS—I am not a huge fan of design oriented subjects like web dev. I think all of that combined is why AI is my choice of study as it encapsulates much of what I love about math and CS into one fascinating subject.
favorite listed projects
I chose ‘Leveraging AI for Improved Public Transit’ as my first choice. I love that it’s AI focused and am fascinating by all the ways public transit can be improved; this will undoubtedly make a positive impact on Lane county. I also live in Lane County so I feel a personal connection to the project.
‘Lidar to 3D Sound Application for the Seeing-impaired’ was another project that I was REALLY interested in working on, but decided to put it towards the bottom of my list because it was not AI focused. It’s projects like these that make me excited to work with AI in the future; what an amazing opportunity CS students have to make the lives of other’s better.
Forgive me if this is not a lively introduction about all things me—as I said, I am not too good at introductions. Thank you for taking the time to read it anyhow, and I hope that it was somewhat insightful/enjoyable.
B Edwards.
