The three companies I decided to focus on are:
- USAA (United Services Automobile Association)
- Veterans United Home Loans
- Navy Federal Credit Union.
I chose these companies for a few reasons. The first is that they are all very large, well known corporations. Second, they all focus on providing services to military members and their families (active duty, veterans, retirees, etc.). Third, employees of all three companies shared that the people are the best thing about their respective companies. What is particularly interesting about these companies is that they all had extremely good ratings, and employees liked working there. However, there is a trend of dissatisfaction within the military and companies associated with it, for having terrible customer service, awful hours/pay and little to no camaraderie. It is encouraging to see that these companies have made the necessary changes to provide employees with a great place to work.
I believe that creating a working environment that encourages and empowers employees to be their best is the most beneficial thing to a company. As a manger, my first priority would be to create a culture within the company that excites employees and incites growth and creativity. Employees who are proud of their work and excited and determined to succeed will seldom lower morale, creating an environment, much like the three companies above, that are successful because of their people.
I believe one of the more challenging aspects of a manager’s role is implementing and following a strategic planning process. Like I mentioned above, their needs to be a solid foundation for employees to latch to. A manager has the difficult task of creating and implementing it. As outlined in the lecture, this strategic planning is especially important to achieve the organization’s objectives.
