3D Scans
The following is a collection of scans taken during the Scotland trip, each with a link to the full 360 scan viewable on the web browser of the viewer’s choice. Each scan was taken using the camera on a 2021 iPhone 12 Mini running iOS v17.6. The app used to make these scans is called Scaniverse, which takes advantage of the phone’s graphical features and the camera’s augmented reality to capture the shape and detail of a subject in high quality. For the highest detail, the scanner requires the user to capture the subject from as many angles as possible. This in turn helps the scanner get a more accurate representation of the subject’s geometry. With the model assembled, the camera also picks up details to use for texturing. This in turn results in an accurate scan, and is how the app’s photogrammetry scans are assembled, which are called “mesh” scans. There’s another type of scan I used for a few of the subjects called “splat” or gaussian splat. The splat scan uses the same tools as mesh, but in combination with AI algorithms to process the scans in a way that learns from what it’s given to construct scans from different angles on its own. These in turn can come with a few inconsistencies with the subject, but the accuracy is still impressive nonetheless. Scans 1 and 18 were captured using splat, while the remaining 21 were captured using mesh. In general, mesh was more helpful in creating high quality scans with accuracy to the real-world, though the cases where I used splat were a little more difficult to capture with mesh, and the added AI features of splat allowed certain details to be filled in automatically. Subjects 3, 8, 9, 11, 14, 17, 21, and 23 each had their own difficulties due to the environment they were captured in, or because of general difficulties with capturing ability. Below, you can find further details on the difficulties of each scan mentioned, as well as details about every other scan. Links are contained for each one.
https://scaniverse.com/scan/5am5hklupolodxso | 1. Notes: Captured using splat. This worked especially well because of the ability to accurately capture a wider area with a good level of focus. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/nlhbx4wox32dqsog | 2. Notes: Captured using mesh, the detail feature and expanded 360 angles really helped bring out the finer detail of this sculpture. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/qu6eyqo5quyxhul4 | 3. Notes: The scan is slightly distorted from the top due to not getting a clear angle at the top. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/u4lwxvl2c2jrgqkg | 4. Notes: Captured using mesh. The smaller area made this easy to capture. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/fydbvpsd5cxjrsad | 5. Notes: Captured using mesh. No 360 on this one due to limited viewing angles. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/azdouap6rmzqoirt | 6. Notes: Captured using mesh, small artifacts were left over after cropping. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/k7tvm7vf77uycee2 | 7. Notes: Captured using mesh, the simple geometry made the scanning process simple. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/iqbwpeegaxwxhqdb | 8.Notes: Scanned using mesh, no full view of the backside due to limited scanning angles. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/3gt76yljqf4v3x5t | 9. Notes: Captured using mesh. The following subject was hanging on a wall, so not all angles were captured. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/uvjph7ldj2rtdocu | 10.Notes: Captured using mesh, included extra artifacts in the scan so the golden plaque would be visible. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/kzyckxahd4jju5qr | 11. Notes: Captured using mesh, the added light exposure and lack of higher-surface captures made this one a little difficult to get a high quality scan from. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/mn2ccvkjhwzlrvli | 12. Notes: Captured using mesh, small inscription on the ground included. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/mbuunwvafzxsxn3a | 13. Notes: Captured using mesh, some background artifacts were left behind. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/6ocr5al5zgepiweq | 14. Notes: Captured using mesh, slight distortion due to capturing difficulties. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/vopcolcwligu32p4 | 15. Notes: Captured using mesh, extra surfaces included. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/jgq2qnqp5jnn2ejv | 16. Notes: captured using mesh, circular crop used to ensure full inscription was included. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/frd376dfddospikp | 17. Notes: Captured using mesh, 360 scan was unfortunately not possible due to obstructions in the environment |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/fmxjteecyy4soxou | 18. Notes: Captured using splat, initially I tried using mesh, but the statue of King Edward was too tall to get a good capture of. Mesh helped assist with the construction of the scan, though some details are still missing. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/t4kjhnr52rwbljgs | 19. Notes: Captured using mesh, the following was presented in the center of a room, allowing for easy 360 capture. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/qgg4tatz5yr2aj2l | 20. Notes: Captured using mesh, greater map of Edinburgh. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/ju6ewlhjg5szfgio | 21. Notes: Captured using mesh, certain angles were obstructed. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/3f2li7b3girrqlih | 22. Notes: captured using mesh, this statue was also easy to capture from all necessary angles. |
https://scaniverse.com/scan/6q5lpqzskonefkww | 23. Notes: Captured using mesh, scanned model was encased in glass, so this scan is slightly distorted. |
