How is my journey so far? Well, ask me this question this time last week and I would have said it was great. I have my environment finished and am working on interacting with my environment by making my puzzles interactive. Things were going well until… the git commit. The first issue that myself and others on my team discovered was it is a little more difficult pushing the large files from Unreal Engine 5 to GitHub. Things weren’t fully being pushed and some files getting left behind. Upon further research, there are some things that we can do to fix this that we are currently working through. Even with trying to push often, the size of our file is now 2 gigabytes, so it is pretty large, and that’s not including a third of the project. While this set back did not help, it only got worse.
Unlike other projects that I have worked on, the environment from which your work didn’t matter much if I was working on Linux and my group members were working on Mac or Windows. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way that with Unreal Engine 5, if you build a project in Linux, it is incompatible with Windows and if you build a project in Windows, it is incompatible with Linux. After spending hours and hours researching how I can convert my Linux project to being Windows compatible, I decided that the best option would be to just restart what I had worked on. I went from being pretty far ahead with where I was at and working on things ahead of our Jira board timeline, to now being behind and playing catch up.
I am still confident that our project will be a success as I am hoping to be completely caught back up by this weekend. Also, my teammates are doing a great job in finding resources and doing things on their end as well. This set back was a real disappointment because everything was going so smooth. I know this is a learning experience and is something that I can grow from. I have faith that I am threw the worst of it and hopefully the rest of this project will be easy sailing.
