BIG UNIONS

I remember being in a union when I used to work for a telecommunication company called AT&T. The union representative approached me and a couple of the other students to talk to us about the union. At that time, I didn’t know what a union was or how it operated. The representative explained how the union works and the benefits it had for the employee. It was explained to me that if the company fire me, the union will speak for me on my behalf. Let me tell ya it was nothing like that exactly and you also have to pay union dues.

The benefits of becoming a member of the union were that they would fight for your job if you were to get fired. They would ensure that your benefits were correct and negotiate for proper pay. The disadvantages were if they went on strike, all the union members had to go on strike as well. If another employee wasn’t performing like they were supposed to, they would still get the same compensation as another employee on the same level. The union dues were automatically deducted from the employee’s payroll account on every other payday.

I would join another union in a heartbeat because now I know the rules of how to play. There are some good benefits when it comes to unions. They help the fight for good working conditions which is needed in big organizations I feel. Employers need to not treat employees like they’re expendable because people need their jobs to take care of their families.
