(1) Dr. Alyssa Liubakka an internal medicine resident and Dr. Byron P. Vaughn an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota in their paper “Clostridium difficile Infection and Fecal Microbiota Transplant” (2017), identify that C. difficile treatment has advanced with the refinement of fecal microbiota transplants and them becoming a potential routine recommendation. (2) Liubakka and Vaugh support this with data that 90% of patients with recurrent C. difficile infections (CDI) are resolved in observational studies and that there is a 90% response rate via fecal microbiota transplant capsules for recurrent CDI’s. (3) The purpose of their work is to examine the potential benefits and risks of using fecal microbiota transplants so that there is more attention and research brought to promising potential guidelines for CDI treatment. (4) Liubakka and Vaugh create a scholarly relationship with their audience of internal medicine physicians and others interested in the advancement of microbiology in healthcare.
