Writing Exercise #6

Prompt: Describe your personal philosophy about how and when you have taken, or would take, antibiotics. What experiences or prior knowledge do you have that shaped that personal philosophy?

I have personally taken antibiotics throughout my life and will continue to when needed. Since being in college I have gotten cellulitis 4 times resulting in having to be prescribed antibiotics. One of the times the cellulitis infected my eyelid and if the antibiotics would not have begun working in the first 24 hours, I would have had to go to the ER. However, I think it is important to only take them when necessary. The threat of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and fungi does worry me quite a bit because of this I follow all the directions my physicians give me. My mom and my physicians have stressed the importance of always finishing the prescription to help stop the development of antibiotic resistance. I always make sure to mention this when my friends ask questions about antibiotics. I am thankful that science has developed antibiotics that work and save lives, but it is important to educate people on the risks.
