{"id":96,"date":"2016-07-29T22:13:14","date_gmt":"2016-07-29T22:13:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/bettye\/?page_id=96"},"modified":"2026-04-29T16:48:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T16:48:21","slug":"about-me","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/bettye\/about-me\/","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am a scientist with decades of experience in <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.oregonstate.edu\/bettye\/publications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/bettye\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">project\/program management<\/a>. I received my B.S. in Zoology and Physiology from Louisiana State University and my Ph.D. in the field of Chemical Carcinogenesis (Molecular Biology\/Biophysics) within the Division of Biological Sciences from the University of Texas at Austin.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, my research focused on cancer research, biomineralization, nanoscience and toxicology. My collaborators in CBEE and I had an NSF-EFRI grant to explore <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nsf.gov\/awardsearch\/showAward?AWD_ID=1240488\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">diatoms as a photosynthetic biorefinery<\/a>. \u00a0I have served as an ad hoc reviewer for the American Chemical Society publications and as a panel reviewer for a federal agency.<\/p>\n<p>My most reacent position was as the Director of Research Development in the College of Science. Previous to this role, I was the Managing Director for the Center for Sustainable Materials Chemistry (CSMC), a large (&gt;$25M) NSF funded Center for Chemical Innovation. Prior to the CSMC, I was the Assistant Director for the Safer Nanomaterials and Nanomanufacturing Initiative (SNNI), a Center funded by the Air Force Research laboratory ($20M) through <a href=\"http:\/\/onami.us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ONAMI<\/a>. During this time, I participated in the development of the International Standards Organization TC 229 (ISO\/TC 229) to develop terminology for nanotechnology. I was the lead scientist drafting the terminology for the bio\/nano interface. I also served on a committee during the formation of the National Nanotechnology Initiative. Prior to SNNI, I managed a large ARO MURI ($15M) and I&#8217;ve also worked in Industry and a crime laboratory.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080\"><em><strong>Bettye L.S.
