CS 463 Extra Credit Blog Post #1
What got you started with computers or software? OSU Journey.
I was an engineering student when I was younger. I took Computer classes when I had to use it for my engineering classes. We had to learn Fortran for Physics back then. I wanted to return to college to finish my degree. I wanted to be able to use my finished credits toward whatever degree I would try to obtain. I was interested in computers and cybersecurity. I saw I could use some of my engineering credits toward a computer science degree. I wanted to try to find an online program that would work around my work and life schedule. I took a few classes online at a Science/Tech community college as I prepared for an online education. I am in California. The only all-online Bachelor in Computer Science at a CSU or UC was CSU Monterey Bay. CSU Monterey Bay at that time required for acceptance into their online program the applicant having already completed and passed with a C the Data Structure class (our CS 261). I was going to a community college that had a great Computer Science Department. They required Computer Architecture (our CS 271) as a prerequisite to their Data Structures. I would have had to take the prerequisite and Data Structures before even having the chance of being accepted into CSU Monterey Bay. I already had years of community college coursework completed during my engineering years. I did not want to continue another two 18 week semesters at the community college to meet those requirements. I wanted to go to a University. I look at the classes I have taken at Oregon State University, and I know I learned a lot more at Oregon State University than I would have learned at any other college I was planning on applying to over two years ago. I think I have a lot more portfolio projects from Oregon State University than I would have had going to any other college that was on my application list back then.
