Looking through the top 100 best places to work for I found quite a lot of places that I recognized and some that I had never heard of. As most people would do, I selected 4 companies that I knew well, or I knew people that worked there. I choose Edward Jones, The Cheesecake Factory, CarMax and KPMG LLP. 3 out of the 4 companies that I selected had People as there biggest thing that employees said makes their company a great workplace. In the lecture slides under why HR matters number one is that people matter. I think that these companies are so highly rated, because they value their employees as the most important asset that they have. Without the people that work for their companies they would not be able to succeed, therefore putting them first will make a great company. All the other word around people also matchup with our week one lecture. These words include diversity, rewards and benefits.
The manager that I want to be is the one that puts their employees first. The health and safety of people is more important than getting a job done that puts people in danger. I want to make sure that everything is done the right way with a safety-first mindset. I think that the hardest thing that a manager must do in their job is finding and keeping good quality workers. I think this because I work in the construction industry and there is a major shortage of workers. This makes finding and keeping good employees very hard, because everyone is competing to get them to come to their company and stay there. As mentioned in class individuals impact the organizations culture. This meaning if a company has good well-rounded group of people that work well together there is a better chance of bringing more quality workers in. This all comes back to that people are the most important thing that a company has, so taking care of them should always be the number one priority.
