In my last job application experience it was honestly fairly disappointing. I applied to a job I was well qualified for and well prepared to interview for. However the communication of the employer leading up to and after the interview was disappointing. Due to that lack of communication by the employer I am glad that the position had not been a fit for me. I think that the way an employer treats an applicate where they are a fit for the position or not is important and reflects the values of the company. I try to research a company well before I apply and see comments from past employees about their experience with the company. My interview for the current company I work for was much different, very inviting and had great communication which reflected the values of the company well. It was this and being able to see a bit of the culture of the company during my interview that influenced my decision to work for the company. I feel like applying for jobs is so faceless now with online applications and it can make it difficult to get a sense of the company before you work there.

Hi Sydney,
As someone who is more recently on the hiring manager side of things, rather than the job seeker side of things, I agree that the process has become very… I guess sterile. With much of the hiring process outsourced to firms like Indeed and LinkedIn, it can be very difficult to form any sort of relationship with applicants until the final stages. I’m pleased that you found a company that has been able to break through that sterility in the hiring process!

Great post Sydney. I am sorry to hear your last job application experience was disappointing. I think a lot of people are having issues in the job market currently. You definitely do not want to start off with communication issues at a company. It may be that the recruiting department is just bad at communicating but you really don’t want to risk it in case it’s a company wide issue. You don’t want to struggle anymore than you need to in the first few weeks at a new employer and bad communication can be a huge hindrance. I’m glad the next interview went better and I agree with your statement that it’s hard to get an understanding of a company when your initial experiences of them are all online.
