Imposter Syndrome

Hello everyone and welcome back for Week 7!

There is a saying that goes “learn one, do one, teach one” and I have found this phrase to be true when it comes to the art of education. The concept is that one must first learn and be taught how to do a task. Then, they must perform the task. Lastly, to become an expert, one must teach another how to do a task, and so the cycle continues. I have felt this way recently while I have been serving as a ULA in the CS 362 course.

This is my first quarter serving as a ULA after taking the CS 362 course myself back in Fall 2021. I enjoy the ability to guide students as well as keep the specific material of this class (software testing techniques) fresh in my mind. It is satisfying to go from learning new techniques to teaching others about them. The experience of being a ULA has helped me see how far I have come and to overcome “imposter syndrome.” Far too often, I think many of us students who have embarked on this new and sometimes isolating journey will at times feel that we are not reaching our full potential. The fact is, there is a lot within computer science to learn, and it is always changing. Sometimes, all it takes is a few moments of interacting with others who are at difference points in their journey to make you realize how far you’ve come.
