Through both research and the participation in the human resource management simulation, we now have a more comprehensive understanding of the importance of job descriptions and its own function within a company. With this in mind, what exactly does make something as simple as a job description so important?
Within a company, there are many different processes and job functions that must be accounted for and completed for a company to be successful. In order to be organized and ensure that those functions are getting done, it is essential that everyone within the company knows their role and what they are responsible for, hence the importance of a job description. Job descriptions lay out these responsibilities and ensure management that all activities are accounted for, and gives everyone a clear vision for what the company is striving for.
Maintaining and developing job descriptions is crucial especially on the recruiting front. By developing accurate job descriptions, you provide prospective talent with the opportunity to gain an understanding of the role that they would be stepping into and they should expect. Additionally, job descriptions all us to set benchmarks for specific jobs and allow companies to adjust their training as necessary (Tyler, 2013). One thing that I’ve personally seen in job descriptions more and more are the physical requirements that come with a job (i.e. lifting objects greater than 50 Lbs 20% of the time). This allows the prospective employee to analyze the job themselves and the capabilities they would have to possess to be able to fill the role.
Overall, job descriptions are a vital, yet forgotten aspect of human resource management that should be maintained and developed regularly. Job descriptions create a standard of accountability in terms of job function distribution, ensuring that every function is accounted for in order to create and maintain a successful and efficient company.
