I’ve been working at a fintech company for the past two years. The company I work for is specializes in core software for credit unions. It’s wonderful working for a company that works with credit unions, as they are not for profit businesses. Credit unions are similar to banks, however they are more person centric and focus on serving their members rather than churning profits like banks.
In this post, I will be talking about my role. I work as a Software Developer I on a team that writes scripts and reports using Java and SQL. Both languages are used simultaneously to write scripts that query the database and apply updates to member accounts. It is like a CRUD application in a way. For example, I would write a script that would charge a $2.00 fee to any member that opts in to one of the credit union’s service such as Identity Theft Protection. Additionally, I work with SQL to manage the vast amount of data that’s stored by the credit unions. This includes information such as account numbers, share (savings) and loan balances, as well as monetary transactions, and much more. I focus primarily on writing SQL queries to extract custom data for the clients. It can be quite challenging as each credit union typically have unique requests although we do have a standard set of scripts and reports that are given out to each credit union.
In conclusion I’ve been enjoying my time at the company and I’ve learned a ton. It’s great to work in a team of developers with a range of experience. Since there are senior developers on the team, I definitely reach out for wisdom and mentorship. Since I have some experience as well, there are more junior members on the team that I mentor which as a result, further solidifies my knowledge since I have to know the material well enough to teach others.
